Timothee Chalamet is undoubtedly one of the most talented actors of his generation. Having begun his career as a teenager with his role in the drama series Homeland, he rose to international acclaim with his role as a lovestruck teenager in the 2017 movie Call Me by Your Name. Over the years, he has starred in movies of many different genres and has been praised for his performances.

Greta Gerwig, Timothee Chalamet, and Saoirse Ronan are long-time collaborators as they have previously worked together in two of Gerwig’s solo directorial movies Lady Bird and Little Women, both of which were released to great critical acclaim. So, naturally, the director wished to have Ronan and Chalamet in her third movie, Barbie, too. Unfortunately, it did not happen, and recently, the Dune star has opened up about it.

Timothee Chalamet Has No Idea What the Cameo Was Going to Be

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie most definitely does not need an introduction at this point. From the star-studded cast to the incredible plot, the movie excelled in every single aspect. Not to mention the cultural phenomenon of Barbeheimer that happened because of the clash of its release date with Christopher Nolan’s biopic Oppenheimer.

Hollywood’s rumor mill never seems to be at rest and one of the products from this mill was that Timothee Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan were supposed to appear in Gerwig’s fantasy comedy revolving around the iconic Mattel dolls. Recently, Chalamet confirmed that it was not just a rumor.

During his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallonthe Interstellar actor said:

“There was an idea for Saoirse Ronan and I to do a cameo in it. I don’t know what the cameo would have been. I think it would have been one of the rejected Kens or Barbies. Not Allan, but something. Maybe there was a rejected French one.”

Apparently, things were quite serious as he even went to meet Gerwig on the set of Barbie after the filming of Wonka was wrapped. Recalling his visit to the set, he said: “It was kind of going from like a fantastical London chocolate [set, to this] insane [Barbie set].” Chalamet is right about the sets being “insane” if the behind-the-scenes pictures are anything to go by.

Barbie became the highest-grossing movie of the year with a collection of more than $1 billion, leaving behind MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and even Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which missed the mark by a tiny bit. Although the movie stars the likes of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, Greta Gerwig did not want to miss out on two of her favorite actors to work with.

Earlier this year, Gerwig told CinemaBlend how dearly she wanted to have Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet in Barbie. She said:

“Well, it was always going to have to be a sort of smaller thing because [Saoirse] was actually producing at the time, which I am so proud of her for. And, of course, it’s brilliant. But it was going to be a specialty cameo. I was also going to do a specialty cameo with Timmy, and both of them couldn’t do it, and I was so annoyed. But I love them so much.”

Hopefully, the three of them will get the chance to work together on a project soon. They have done some projects together, so it will obviously be a delight to see them collaborate again.

Wonka is now in theatres.
