The showrunner of Doctor Who, Russell T Davies, opens up about Marvel star David Tennant returning as the Doctor in the franchise. This comes after the series’ 60th anniversary specials, where the Doctor was seen to be bi-generated, which led to him being split between his current self and the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa). It made it possible for the Fourteenth Doctor to stay on earth, whereas the Fifteenth Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, flew away to new adventures.

The Doctor being bi-generated means that both versions of the Doctor are in existence in that universe. In a recent revelation with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar), Russell T Davies opened up about David Tennant’s future in the Doctor Who series after Ncuti Gatwa took the mantle from him.

What did Russell T Davies say about David Tennant’s future in Doctor Who?

In a Q&A attended by SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar), Russell T Davies opened up about how he has no plans to revisit Tennant’s Doctor Who as of now. In a playful manner, he said that it’s the “age of Ncuti now:”

“Sorry, it’s the age of Ncuti now. It’s ‘David Who..?’ No plans, genuinely, because it’s a busy time. These two are gonna just sail across the universe and capture your hearts, so it’s time to look at these two.”

Millie Gibson also opened up about the new era of Doctor Who while talking to Total Films:

“I think [Ruby’s] dynamic with the Doctor is very much like two girls at school gossiping. They’re very cliquey. I think the Doctor’s not had that sort of dynamic before. It’s really beautiful to see come alive when you do watch it.”

Ncuti Gatwa will be portraying Doctor Who, and his companion, Ruby Sunday, will be portrayed by Millie Gibson. Ncuti Gatwa already made his debut on the show on the 60th Anniversary Special, and Millie Gibson is set to appear in the upcoming Christmas special.

What is David Tennant’s future in the Whoverse by Russell T Davies?

While Fourteenth still has his TARDIS, he is flying away to France to be a part of the Noble family, settling down and processing everything he has been through since Gallifrey. He has passed his mantle to the Fifteenth Doctor and would likely spend his time surrounded by family and people he loves while the Fifteenth saves the universe.

However, Russell T Davies does not seem keen on bringing David Tennant’s Doctor back with a spin-off show, even though he has plans on expanding the franchise. While Rose Noble would come back in Doctor Who season 14, David Tennant’s Doctor Who would just be mentioned instead of appearing on screen.

Russell T Davies has brought back previous Doctors in the spin-off show Tales of the TARDIS before, showing that he wants to revisit the old Doctors. However, Russell T Davies seems headstrong about the Fourteenth Doctor taking a permanent break from saving the world. So, the audience should not expect him to appear on screen anytime soon.

Doctor Who: The Giggle is available to watch on Disney+ for international audiences and BBC iPlayer for UK viewers.
