Keira Knightley thought that the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was going to fail

Richard Curtis’, Love Actually came out in 2003 and is going to complete 20 years of its release soon. The romantic comedy starring Keira Knightley, Hugh Grant, and others established Knightley as a promising teen star. On ABC’s The Laughter & Secrets of Love Actually: 20 Years Later, the film’s director shared an interesting conversation that he once shared with Knightley.

Richard Curtis reportedly asked the actress about her next or upcoming project in 2003. Knightley said, “‘I don’t think it’s going to work. It’s a pirate film and they always fail,” referring to the Johnny Depp starring franchise. The Curse of the Black Pearl was the first of the many Pirates of the Caribbean sequels and marked the start of a billion-dollar franchise.

The Love Actually actress was not wrong to doubt the Pirates of the Caribbean at that time

It might seem funny now to doubt a Pirates of the Caribbean movie but back in the day, it was a big gamble. Cutthroat Island was the last big movie that was released in the genre before the POTC franchise and it was a massive flop. The Curse of the Black Pearl is widely considered responsible for the revival of the genre. Keira Knightley played the role of Elizabeth Swann in the first three sequels. And her role in the franchise helped her achieve global stardom very swiftly.

The future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise still remains unsure. Johnny Depp has already previously announced that he will never be playing the role of Captain Jack Sparrow again. Depp decided on this as Disney had dropped him from the sixth installment of the franchise even before any proof of violence was presented before the world. After the world witnessed the infamous defamation trial between him and Amber Heard, fans have begged him to reprise his role as the beloved pirate. But, Depp has not made any statement on the matter yet.
