“It’s an intimidating process”: Tom Hanks’ Son Was Not His First Choice To Play His Younger Self in $108M Movie

The highly accomplished and one of the most respected Hollywood actors, Tom Hanks is someone whose name alone carries immense weight in the industry. His family, like a few others, has made a significant presence in the industry. Rita Wilson is an accomplished actress and producer, and similarly, his children, Colin Hanks and Elizabeth Hanks, have pursued careers in the entertainment industry, along with his son from his late wife, Samantha Lewes, Truman Hanks, who is also a film aspirant. Truman Hanks also acted in the movie A Man Called Otto as Hanks’s childhood version, which he wasn’t ready for.

Truman Hanks lacked interest in Tom Hanks’ movie

The Man Called Otto was released in theaters on January 23, and the titular role is played by Tom Hanks and his son, Truman Hanks. In the movie, Tom Hanks is starred as a widower who develops an unexpected friendship with the lively family next door. His son, Truman Hanks, who was cast to play his childhood version showed his disinterest initially, as the director, Marc Foster, shared in an interview with Yahoo.

The 27-year-old son previously had a minor role in Hanks’ 2020 News of the World before taking the lead as Otto. To add effective gravitas to the storyline, director Foster suggested Hanks cast his son. Hanks, when asked about Truman’s casting in Seth Meyers’ show, admitted that “it was an intimidating process”. Truman was not ready for him to take part in flashback scenes, but Hanks ultimately encouraged him to try his hand.

In an interview with People, Truman Hanks said that he does an impression of Tom, “but it’s not what people expect”.

“Whenever I do my imitation of him, people are like, That’s not what he sounds like. But I have to convey to you the way I hear him. Everyone else hears, ‘Houston, we have a problem’; I hear this grumpy old man who’s mad at the DVD player.”

The film The Man Called Otto received overwhelmingly positive reviews and grossed $108 million worldwide.

Truman Hanks loves cinematography more than acting

Despite being the son of the legendary movie star, the younger Hanks never showed an interest in acting until his role in A Man Called Otto. Apart from acting, Hanks showed an interest in cinematography, where he already has a background in the production of several films.

According to IMBD, he is credited for working in the camera section of News of the World, as an assistant cameraperson in the 2021 musical drama, West Side Story. He also worked as a  film loader in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City.

Tom Hanks’s son, Chet Hanks, also predominantly works in several films, including the Emmy-nominated drama Power, and has some minor roles in notable shows like Shameless, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Your Honor.

His oldest son, Colin Hanks, is much more famous for his roles in King Kong and Orange County, including television roles, in The Good Guy, Roswell has also acted in the popular series Dexter.

The Man Called Otto is available on Netflix.
