The controversy between Mattel and the Aqua band revolved around the song Barbie Girl which was released by Aqua in 1997. Mattel, the toy company that owns the Barbie brand, took issue with the song and its lyrics, as they felt it portrayed Barbie in a negative light and used the brand for commercial purposes without permission. As a result, Mattel filed a lawsuit against Aqua and the song’s creators, claiming trademark infringement and defamation. This song could have been featured in the ongoing movie Barbie starring Margot Robbie.
In April 2022, Nystrom’s manager Ulrich Moller-Jorgensen told Variety: “The song will not be used in the movie.” Months later, the band imprecisely unveiled the reason, saying it would be “cheese on cheese.”
“I totally understand why they didn’t use it,” said the lead singer at that time, “but it’s going to bring us a lot of attention, no matter what.” Keyboardist Soren Rasted even joked: “We should say we turned it down. Ryan Gosling is not good enough!”
As the Barbie world thrives, embracing the mesmerism of nostalgia, a delightful surprise awaits eager ears. With the dawn of the new Barbie song, Aqua extends a warm welcome to the notable voices of Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice by writing on their Instagram:
“Two more Barbies added to the playhouse”.
With this current song, fans are vibing on all social media handles and especially on Instagram reels.
Who Won The Lawsuit
The legal battle between Mattel and Aqua gathered weighty media attention and became a high-profile case. Ultimately, the court ruled in favor of Aqua, stating that the song was a form of parody and thus qualified as fair use. The court’s decision supported the argument that the song’s satirical nature was protected under the right to free speech and artistic expression.
Despite the legal victory, the controversy helped boost Barbie Girl to even greater fame. The song’s catchy tune and playful lyrics echoed with audiences, and it became one of the band’s biggest hits. Over the years, the song has remained a cultural touchstone and continues to be associated with both the Aqua band and the Barbie brand.
