Cillian Murphy is most notably known for his role as Thomas ‘Tommy’ Shelby in the period crime-drama Peaky Blinders. The spotlight on him has brightened since his recent portraying the titular character of J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s biographical thriller Oppenheimer. As more pictures from the movie started being released, the internet went rampant with how similar the expressions and looks are of both the characters. Now it can’t be completely overruled that the Birmingham gangster and the American Prometheus have traits in common. But they are not as similar as the online speculators make them to be.

These characters were completely different, Tommy Shelby is a returning character, so we would finish one series and then we’d have a year off or so and then we’d go and make another series, and I’d get to do work in between. so this is a one-off, very intense, but we shot it very quickly.

Both characters and really dynamic and explosive. A working-class Brit gangster with PTSD cannot possibly be similar to a Harvard graduate who took six courses per semester. And yet the weight of war, the loss of loved ones, and understanding of destruction are traits they undoubtedly share. To the actor who plays them, they could be all the difference but to the audience, Oppenheimer will surely remind them of Tommy Shelby for they exhibit a similar darkness.
