“It’s not dead”: Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Project Gets a Positive Update – But Are Star Wars Fans Happy?
Space opera Star Wars is one of the world’s oldest franchises that features supernatural beings. Having begun in 1977 under the supervision of the legendary creator George Lucas, the franchise has established its name among the most critically acclaimed multimedia franchises such as the MCU and DCU in the past few decades.
A number of directors have tried their hands at directing a Star Wars movie. Among these directors, George Lucas himself who directed the first three movies of the original film series takes the topmost spot. Other directors who have made notable contributions to this franchise are Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand. As of recent, Jojo Rabbit director Taika Waititi has been working on a project in this franchise.
Taika Waititi Continues To Work On A New Star Wars Movie
Recently, on his podcast The Hot Mic, journalist and Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider said that rumors about the Thor: Love and Thunder director’s Star Wars movie getting canceled are false. He revealed what he had heard from his sources, saying:
“It’s not dead. Taika [Waititi] has turned in multiple drafts at this point and other writers as well have touched it. Taika owes them [Lucasfilm] another draft after the [WGA] strike is over.”
Fans’ response to Taika Waititi’s last two Thor movies, namely Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder has not been too good owing to the amount of deviation from the source material. So, while some fans are overjoyed to hear that he is still in on the Star Wars project, there are also some fans who have wanted him to stay away from that franchise.
Nobody wants you making a star wars movie, Taika.

Not disappointed at all. He would have likely ruined his SW film, just like Feige.

Aw man, that kinda sucks. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve seen from him so far, I would have been down to see Star Wars with his style.

I would have liked to see Waititi’s Star Wars movie, since it would have been totally independent of the main saga.

Waititi has responded to the criticism he has received for the Thor movies he directed. Despite the mixed reactions to his making a Star Wars movie, the director remains unbothered as he keeps working on the script considering that is the only way he can prove that he can do it well.
Taika Waititi Was Struggling With The Script
The past decades have seen the rise and fall of many franchises, Star Wars is certainly not one of those as it continues to enthrall audiences with the smallest update about a new show, movie, or spin-off. On May 4, 2020, it was announced that Taika Waititi was going to direct and co-write a movie that would have been released in late 2023 if things had gone smoothly which is evidently not the case.
In late May 2023, Waititi revealed that he was specifically finding the middle portion of the movie hard to write which was resulting in unprecedented delays in the movie’s production. He told The Hollywood Reporter:
“I’ve got a really good idea for it. It’s just as with all films, it’s this middle part. You’re like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ And then you look at all of those films that are so great, you’re like, ‘Well, I guess they can’t meet some smuggler with an alien sidekick.'”
Although details about the plot of Taika Waititi’s movie are not known, the director has assured fans that it is going to have new characters in an expanded version of the galaxy.
