“It’s not my favorite thing to do”: Charlie Hunnam Refused to Kiss Dakota Johnson Because of His Own Phobia That Made Him Lose $1.3B Sprawling Franchise
Charlie Hunnam has been making a splash and creating an impressive resume off of his Hollywood career. He was truly swung to fame with his spectacular performance in the hit television series Sons of Anarchy, cast as Jackson “Jax” Teller. Despite his professional success in the entertainment biz, the actor is sure to regret his great role in the raunchy romance franchise Fifty Shades of Grey.
Hunnam was signed to star in the highly anticipated movie starring Dakota Johnson. However, the actor avoided the role stating multiple reasons that only ended up breaking his heart, upon learning about the franchise’s success.
Charlie Hunnam turned down the right project under the wrong circumstances
At times celebrities make the mistake of underestimating a project and turning it down, only to learn about its massive success and regret it later. Similar something happened to Charlie Hunnam, only he didn’t underestimate the franchise, and instead avoided it for personal reasons.
For those of you who don’t know Charlie Hunnam, he could have been the billionaire with an affinity for BDSM, starring beside Dakota Johnson. Yes, he could have played the role of Christian Grey from the $1.3B Fifty Shades franchise, but he turned down the offer. Well, after the massive success of the franchise Hunnam shared in an interview “I loved the character and I wanted to do it … It was one of those damned if you do, damned if you don’t situations”.
Charlie Hunnam was apparently too busy for the role of Christian Grey with his other projects like Sons of Anarchy and Crimson Peak. The scheduling conflict between the two projects landed Hunnam in a chaotic place which he considers the “worst professional experience”. Hunnam stated in an interview with Variety, “It was the most emotionally destructive and difficult thing that I’ve ever had to deal with professionally”.
The star initially opened up about turning down the franchise stating his busy schedule. However, it was later revealed that there was something deeper and much more serious that led to his traumatizing decision.
Charlie Hunnam states the reason behind his traumatizing decision
The scheduling conflict that arose due to Sons of Anarchy was Hunnam’s initial reason. However, it later shifted to Crimson Peak being his actual reason for dropping out of the Fifty Shades franchise. But amid his “heartbreaking” moment of losing a billion-dollar opportunity, the actor finally revealed his reluctance towards intimate scenes.
Hunnam shared, “I try to be sensitive to the fact that we’re doing something intimate, but also keep a clear boundary”. Apart from the reason that intimate scenes are “not my girlfriend’s favorite part of my job” Hunnam stated about his phobia that drove him to turn down the career-changing offer.
“It’s not my favorite thing to do. I’m also a germaphobe.” Hunnam shared the actual reason for turning down a movie that is based on intimacy. “I’ve been profoundly germaphobic since I was a young child. I don’t want to kiss anyone but my girlfriend for my whole life.” the actor further shared. The requirement of the movie specially mentioning several intimate scenes with co-star Dakota Johnson somehow drove Hunnam away from a groundbreaking role. His loss of not being cast in a $1.3B franchise still haunts him to the core.
Charlie Hunnam further shared, he was so heartbroken by his decision of turning down the movie, that he still refuses to watch it. Hunnam stated that it reminds him of his traumatic experience and he finds it too hard to watch.
