Aoyama expressed that it would be interesting if he could have a conversation with Oda, both having reached 100 volumes at the same time and revealed that Oda had written at the end of the volume that although he hadn’t met Aoyama yet, he was like a brother to him. He also congratulated Aoyama for reaching Conan’s 100 volumes.

As the interview progressed, Oda and Aoyama exchanged information easily with each other, their camaraderie was pretty obvious even in the mundanity of the conversation. When asked about their experience watching each other’s films, Oda exclaimed that he found Halloween no Hanayome cool.

Oda further expressed his surprise over the fact that the female fans of Detective Conan were increasing since he thought it was a shonen manga that revolves around a kid solving mysteries. After watching the movie, Oda pieced together why even female fans were into this series. He joked:

“I see, they like the people from the security police and the handsome grown man.”

Meanwhile, Aoyama praised Oda’s movie One Piece Film Gold, saying that it was fun because he loved places like Las Vegas and sparkling places. He further commented that he wanted to go to the Casino ship (Gran Tesoro).

Aoyama asked Oda about the turtle moving a car in his movie, to which Oda replied that he left most of the normal scripts to the scriptwriter and that he only checked the contents and fixed everything.

Continuing with the same question Oda explained that he couldn’t proceed with the manga if he put too much into the movie. He says:

If I put too much into the movie I can’t proceed with the manga so it’s difficult. But in oreder to make it popular I know I have to bring new fans by making the world talk abouut a new movie once every 3 years. But it’s really difficult! If I have to do it I’ll be picky to a great extent.

In fact, this is a problem most mangakas face when they are conflicted between the quality of their work and their need for perfection. Oda confirms this notion by saying that in the end, he ended up being involved in the propaganda process, checking the volume of the theaters and the time it takes, and even going as far as watching the poster’s layouts.

The One Piece anime is available for streaming on Crunchyroll and the manga is available on VIZ Media.
