Kesy has been in the entertainment industry for a long time now. However, he did not gain much recognition until he starred in the FX horror drama The Strain, which aired from 2014 to 2016. One thing led to another and now he is playing the lead role in the superhero horror film Hellboy: The Crooked Man. While this news is interesting, an even more interesting thing is the story behind his audition for the role.

The Behind-the-scenes of Jack Kesy’s Audition for Hellboy is One Hell of a Story

Jack Kesy‘s story behind his audition for the character of Hellboy is the recent addition to the list of most iconic audition stories. In an interview with The AU Review, Kesy recounted how a producer he had worked with before rang him up and asked him to send in an audition tape while the actor was driving through Detroit.

I smoke from time to time, and I just thought, “Well, this guy smokes.” I know Hellboy smokes. I’ve seen the comic books. He got little rollies. I figured this guy’s half human, half demon. I don’t even think he likes to smoke, he just likes to pretend he’s one of the cool kids to fit in. I figured, to him, it’s like potato chips. So, it was just the thing I created. Plus, I couldn’t throw it out on a carpet.

If you are wondering if Kesy smoked throughout his audition, you are probably right. Just before the actor narrated this story, the interviewer suggested that director Brian Taylor had told them that it was the smoking in the audition that sealed the deal for them.

Margot Robbie Slapped Leonardo DiCaprio Out of the Blue During Her Audition for The Wolf of Wall Street

One of the most famous audition stories is where Margot Robbie told Harper’s Bazaar that she slapped Leonardo DiCaprio across the face while doing an argument scene with him for her The Wolf of Wall Street audition. She did it to impress the film’s director, Martin Scorsese, and the rest is history.

There are plenty of other hilarious audition stories. For starters, Hugh Jackman admitted on Late Night with Stephen Colbert that he knew nothing about Wolverine, the character that catapulted him to stardom when he turned up at the audition for X-Men. He was so unaware that he took the name literally and even tried to mimic a wolf’s mannerisms. Luckily, he still landed the role.

Then, there is the story of Kit Harington (via W Magazine) turning up for his Game of Thrones audition with a black eye because he got into a fight right before it. Let’s just say he embodied Jon Snow for the audition. Bill Skarsgård, on the other hand, was asked to show up as a clown for the audition of IT, in which he played Pennywise (via Entertainment Weekly).

So, Skarsgård did what any sane person would: he drove across Los Angeles with his clown makeup, practiced the laugh in his car, and walked a couple of blocks to get to the audition venue. He was pretty much in character throughout all of this. No wonder he landed the role even if he might have given heart attacks to half of the city’s population in the process.
