James Cameron is one of the most innovative filmmakers in Hollywood. Known for using new technologies while making movies in the classical style, he is rightfully a prominent figure in the New Hollywood era. The director has won numerous accolades over the years and bagged three Academy Awards solely for his work in the 1999 disaster romance Titanic, which is one of the highest-grossing movies of all time.

The mind-boggling visual effects obviously play a great role in the success of James Cameron’s movies, but the themes of these movies are also very deep and praiseworthy. While every single one of his projects is distinct and incomparable, recently, the director drew comparisons between two of his own most victorious movie franchises- the Terminator franchise and the Avatar saga.

James Cameron on What Makes the Terminator Franchise Different from the Avatar Saga

Most movies directed by James Cameron are blockbusters so at this point, it does not even come as a surprise when one of his movies takes the top spot in the list of the highest-grossing movies of the year. It has to be noted that the studios were not always supportive of the director’s ideas, but he refused to back down and kept doing his thing.

There is a common approach that the True Lies director has had for some of his best movies. The approach is seeing the worst possible thing that can happen to Earth in the future. Even so, the stories are very different and differ in the degree of nihilism.

Explaining how the Terminator franchise differs from the Avatar films in an interview with GQ, Cameron said:

“The Terminator [films were] warnings, which is what science fiction is good at. But I feel like with the Avatar films, we want to emphasize what’s great about us. The Na’vi are that which we used to be, or that which we can maybe still be—[you can] step outside ourselves and see ourselves in a more positive light. The colors pop in the Avatar films. They feel rich.”

It is nearly impossible to beat James Cameron when it comes to giving logical answers and considering both of these are his movies, no one knows them better than him.

When asked about the new creative innovation that fans can expect to see in Avatar 3, which is halfway into the post-production process, James Cameron told GQ:

“The big [creative] advance in this movie is just going to be greater character depth. We’re seeing new cultures, new creatures—all the same stuff you’d expect from an Avatar movie, but the whole idea of this cycle of films is to live with these people and go on this epic journey with them.”

Cameron went on to say that the movie is not only going to be about great VFX but also a better look into the characters. In fact, there will also be some new characters.
