While many people might view this as a director milking the cash cow more than necessary, others know the infinite potential of the Avatar franchise. A whole new world created by James Cameron, Avatar is more than mere movies. The franchise has become incredibly successful in showcasing the lives of Na’vi warriors and the RDA soldiers in the fictitious world. The epic tale of love, loss and survival further consolidates Cameron’s position in Hollywood as an inspirational filmmaker.

The first instalment of Avatar premiered in 2009 with a $237 million budget that ended up raking in a whopping $2.923 billion at the box office. The second movie, Avatar: The Way of Water released in 2022 which also saw the filming of the third and fourth instalment simultaneously. It has been reported that the third movie will be released on December 19, 2025. With the fourth and fifth movies on the verge of completion, they will be going into post-production soon. Fans can expect the fourth and fifth editions of Avatar to hit the big screens somewhere around 2029 and 2031.

Not only that, it seems like Cameron is geared up to replicate the mass success of Star Trek and Star Wars and spawn more sequels to Avatar. Editions six and seven are also reportedly under consideration as Cameron is brimming with ideas. Work on the forthcoming sequels will allegedly start soon and etch Cameron’s name in the hall of fame of directors for eternity. In an interview with People, he said,

“Star Trek, Star Wars, the world-building franchises that have been around since I was a kid, those were my inspirations. And as I was saying out there, we’re still a young universe. We’re only two movies in, we’re halfway through our third right now, To have that kind of cultural impact over time, you got to pour all your heart and energy into it.”

Avatar, according to Cameron, must be a cultural landmark in pop culture. This helps them put their hearts and souls into the movies and deliver what the audience expects of them. The director further discusses what’s next for his connection to the movies as he is getting older and will need to train another director to take over.

Who Will Direct Avatar 6 and 7?

It might be a bit of a stretch to believe Cameron will take on the direction and production of Avatar 6 and 7 by himself. The 69-year-old filmmaker has huge plans for the franchise, but he might have to hand it over the reins to some other director who will see the projects to fruition. Cameron is aware of this fact and knows mortality will catch up to him soon. He acknowledged the fact and expressed,

“We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point. I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We’re loving it. We get to work with great people.”

Jon Landau, the executive producer of Avatar further expressed how they have more stories to tell. They are not trying to force themselves into a world and churn out stories. Cameron, being a storyteller by heart, always has a new story to share with the world. Moreover, the success of the first and second instalments of the franchise propelled the crew to keep working on it and produce more blockbusters.
