SUMMARY
  • James Cameron has made some of the best movies ever using top-notch CGI effects.
  • He has now become one of the directors of the artificial intelligence company Stability AI.
  • Fans are rather unimpressed with the Titanic director's decision to become a part of an AI company.

James Cameron has been an ace in the filmmaking game for decades now. It all began in 1978 when he had to take financial help to learn what he does best now. In just 4 years, he went from a miniature model maker for a studio to the scribe of what would turn out to be one of the most acclaimed films in the history of cinema. This movie was none other than The Terminator, released in 1984.

As a prominent figure in post-New Era Hollywood, saying that Cameron revolutionized cinema through his blend of cutting-edge technology and classic filmmaking is hardly an exaggeration. Now, he is looking to take things one step further as he is joining the board of directors of the artificial intelligence company Stability AI.

Every creative has their way of bringing art forth for the audiences to see. While Christopher Nolan believes in using practical effects regardless of how tough it can be to create some scenes, James Cameron has never hesitated to put technology to good use for his projects.

The first film in which Cameron used CGI was The Abyss, released in 1989. The movie was a critical and commercial success and even won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The Alien director has since not looked back as he has continued to use CGI in his movies even though it has also backfired at times.

Those few exceptions failed to deter Cameron and led to the making of masterpieces like the Avatar film series. Taking his love for technology a little further, he is now becoming a member of the Board of Directors of Stability AI. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, he said:

I was at the forefront of CGI over three decades ago, and I’ve stayed on the cutting edge since. Now, the intersection of generative AI and CGI image creation is the next wave. The convergence of these two totally different engines of creation will unlock new ways for artists to tell stories in ways we could have never imagined.

The director further said that he is delighted to be collaborating with the team of the artificial intelligence company. This is the firm that developed the Stable Diffusion text-to-image generative AI model, an image and video-focused model.

In the rapidly changing technological landscape, it does not come as too much of a surprise that big names are jumping on the wagon. However, the usage of AI also threatens creatives across different fields including the film industry.

Part of the reason for last year’s dual actors and writers’ strike was the increasing inclination towards AI. Fans have not held back their criticism of Cameron regarding his recent decision. Here is not what they had to say:

While embracing new technology is a good step, choosing to become a part of a company that might later endanger the livelihoods of millions of creatives is probably not the best way to go about it. The Titanic director is considered one of the best creatives in Hollywood, so any step he takes is likely to set an example for those who look up to him and value his opinions.
