James Gunn Drops Bombshell ‘Superman’ Update Ahead of Trailer Release, Hails David Corenswet as “one of the best actors”

James Gunn recently shared an exciting update about the upcoming movie, especially about the lead actor.

James Gunn praises David Corenswet for his work on Superman

Ahead of the release of the movie, James Gunn spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and shared that he is currently screen-testing Superman. The filmmaker never shies away from praising his lead actor, David Corenswet, whose casting came as a surprise to the fans. He said,

Honestly, from the bottom of my heart, David Corenswet is going to freak everyone out with how great he is. He is one of the best actors I’ve ever worked with, and he can do everything. The man is incredible.

Gunn noted during the interview that Superman is an “enormous bear of a movie,” adding that it’s very different from the show in every way, but still very much fantastic. When Henry Cavill announced that he’d be hanging his suit forever and Corenswet was announced as the one replacing him, a lot of fans were skeptical about him.

But James Gunn was confident that Corenswet was going to be perfect for the part, and he stands by his stance to date.

Gunn is not the only one who has praised the actor. Frank Grillo, who stars in Superman, also echoed the same sentiment in an interview with Collider. He said Corenswet is going to be a superstar, adding that he’s amazing, and so is the rest of the cast. Grillo noted that Superman is going to be a great movie.

Gunn’s take on Superman is going to be different as it’ll focus on hope, humanity, and action while offering a fresh perspective on the character. Fans have been eager to watch the movie on the big screen and see how it’s going to stand out from past iterations.

James Gunn clarifies rumors about studio executives being unhappy with the Superman trailer

Recently, there were some rumors about DC Studios’ executives being unhappy about the trailer of the upcoming Superman movie. An industry insider noted that there is enormous pressure internally from Warner Bros. on the marketing team to ensure that the first teaser trailer of Superman is received well.

Answering the question, James Gunn took to Threads to clarify that it is sort of true before explaining that when they say ‘studio,’ it solely means him as he is the only studio involved with the trailer. He wrote,

This is the exact same rigorous process I’ve gone through cutting every Guardians trailer, pushing the marketing folks as hard as I can, cutting & recutting until I think we have something worthy of the film itself.

Gunn mentioned that his notes are more specific than ‘just make it better’, because he is creatively demanding. He later mentioned that he had watched the trailer about a thousand times, and Grillo, in speaking with Collider, mentioned

I got a sneak peek at a little bit of the trailer, and I’m not joking, and I’m not blowing this out of proportion; my skin was hot, and I had goosebumps. That’s how great it is.

Earlier, Gunn noted that Corenswet as Superman is going to blow people the f***ing away because he is the movie star that everyone just dreams he could be. The filmmaker mentioned that no one understands the depth of the actor’s talent, dramatically and comedically, pointing out that he’s the best physical action star he has ever probably worked with.

Superman is set to release in July 2025.
