Matt Reeves’ The Batman starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Zoë Kravitz, etc., recounts the story of Batman fighting crime in Gotham City. The movie goes on to uncover the corruption in the city while pursuing a serial killer, Riddler, who targets Gotham City’s corrupt elite. The Batman’s sequel is not a part of James Gunn’s DCU.

Reeves wrote the screenplay for the movie alongside Peter Craig and decided to explore the detective side of the iconic character. He drew inspiration for his story from Alfred Hitchcock’s movies and the New Hollywood era. Upon its release, the much-awaited movie did manage to impress the audience and critics with fans now eagerly waiting for the sequel. There has been a positive yet exciting update in The Batman universe.

James Gunn confirms Matt Reeves’ Arkham Asylum series to be a part of DCU

James Gunn and Peter Safran have been under the spotlight since the day they took over the reins of DC Studios as co-CEOs and announced that they intend to create their own DC Universe. Some fans accepted their decision are appreciated the fact that they were trying to do something different, but some of them were upset as they did not want them to disrupt or manipulate the comic book characters.

But with Superman: Legacy, the DC Universe is going to kick off, and they have a lot of projects under their universe, which the fans are thrilled to witness. Recently replying to a comment in threads, James Gunn confirmed that director Matt Reeves who is working on the sequel of The Batman is also working to develop Arkham Asylum series, which is going to be a part of DC Universe.

He wrote after a fan asked him about the updates on what Matt Reeves is up to;

“Right now Matt is producing Arkham as DCU series, so there’s just the two for now. We love Matt as a director and producer so he’ll be producing stories both within his The Batman universe and within the DCU”

Gunn further noted that the Arkham series was always intended to be set in the DCU and not a part of Elseworlds. He said that it was one of the first pitches they bought when he and Peter Safran came on board.

James Gunn clarifies why Matt Reeves’ The Batman was not a part of the DC Universe

The Batman Universe was made as part of Elseworlds franchise and not the DC Universe created by James Gunn and Peter Safran. When Gunn was asked what made them put The Batman Universe in Elseworlds and not allow it to exist within the new DCU, he replied,

“It’s not an ‘allowed’ thing. It’s Matt’s choice and we respect that.”

Not just The Batman Universe is set in Elseworlds, but The Penguin series, Todd PhillipsJoker 2, and the animated Harley Quinn series are also part of Elseworlds. Now, Matt Reeves, who will now be working both in Elseworlds and DC Universe had mentioned to The Toronto Sun earlier in March;

“We’re doing this Penguin series and one of the great things about that is Colin Farrell- he’s like you’ve never seen him. He’s so incredible and he’s a scene-stealer. Along the way, we thought maybe we could do OZ as a series.”

He continued,

“So I talked to HBO Max, and showed them Colin in the movie and spoke to them about what this could be and they said, ‘let’s do it’. So we are doing that and we’re doing another series that connects to Arkham Asylum.”

Matt Reeves lastly added that they are also talking about the next movies, but at the time, he wanted the audience to like The Batman, and they did. He said Robert Pattinson is an incredible Batman.
