James Gunn Might Eat His Own Words As His “one of the greatest Superhero movies” ‘The Flash’ May Become the Worst DCU Movie of All Time
James Gunn has been disappointed recently with the performance of the latest release from his franchise, The Flash. With a considerable time period being passed since its release, The Flash has been declared to be a total flop. It was billed by the studio itself as “probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made” The superhero movie has been a box office bomb. The movie’s performance has been said to be an unmitigated disaster by multiple sources.
The Flash Is On The Verge Of Becoming DC’s Worst Superhero Movie
Andy Muschietti’s The Flash is currently projected to become Warner Bros.’ biggest flop in studio history. Following the first showing of The Flash at CinemaCon, many praised it for being one of the best movies that DC has ever made. After half a decade’s worth of delays and tons of controversies, the film finally made its theatrical debut this summer.
Despite receiving overwhelmingly positive word-of-mouth from the Top Gun: Maverick star Tom Cruise, author Stephen King, and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, The Flash has been a total mess at the domestic and global box office. The new DC superhero movie starring Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman grossed an underwhelming $55 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend. But in its second weekend, that dropped 72% to a mere $15.3 million and is currently struggling to reach even the $100 million mark.
The Flash had a production budget of $200-220 million and an additional $150 million in marketing, the movie may end up losing Warner Bros. $200 million at the end of its box office run. Despite the softer opening, there were still some hopes that the film could rebound without any major new openers to rival it. Instead, it did exactly the opposite and record the worst-ever week-on-week drop for a DC movie.
What Plans Does James Gunn Has For Reviving DC Universe?
The new bosses of the DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran have laid down a detailed plan for the revival of the DC Universe. DC’s latest release, The Flash was used to reset the timeline and provide a clean slate for the upcoming movies. DC Studios has had a rough couple of months with Warner Bros. Discovery making a lot of changes behind the scenes. While several previously planned movies and shows have been scrapped, the studio is planning on taking the Universe in a totally new direction.
After the epic Box office failure of DC’s latest release, The Flash all eyes are set on Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. These are the last two DC films of 2023 and the final WB superhero flicks. Releasing Aquaman 2 in the theatres or skipping its theatrical release will determine a lot for DC. Similarly, Blue Beetle should also revert to its original plan of a direct-to-streaming release.
A wide release also attracts massive expenses not only to play in theaters across the globe but also on marketing to make the audiences aware of the movie’s release. In such a scenario Warner Bros. cannot afford to pour in more money into Blue Beetle as it is totally unknown to the viewers and will require highly positive word-of-mouth to deliver a miraculous performance at the box office.
