James Gunn Reacts to the Presence of Superman and Other DC Heroes in the MCU
Director James Gunn’s response to Superman and other DC heroes who exist in the MCU:
Director James Gunn reacts to the recent news that Superman and other DC heroes exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gunn is a prominent creative influence within the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a result of his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy films. In recent years, he’s moved over to the DCEU to direct The Suicide Squad, an R-rated reimagining of the main villain/anti-hero squad. Gunn has more DC projects in the pipeline, including the HBO Max spin-off series Peacemaker, which premieres in January. Gunn is currently hard at work preparing to begin filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is set to be released in May 2023. So far, Gunn is the only filmmaker who has worked on films for both the MCU and the DCEU, making him uniquely qualified to respond to the latter’s current announcement. To the delight of fans, a recent trailer for next month’s Eternals showed that Superman does, in fact, exist within the MCU. Because of their comparable skill sets, Phastos’ (Brian Tyree Henry) little son mistook Ikaris (Richard Madden) for the Man of Steel.
James Gunn’s Joke on director Chloé Zhao for the Superman reference:

After hearing Eternals director Chloé Zhao’s explanation for the Superman connection, Gunn laughed about the revelation on social media on Saturday afternoon. Zhao reiterated that Superman does not exist in the MCU as a real person, but rather as a fictitious comic book character. She then joked, “you never know,” about something else, to which Gunn responded, “I’m quite sure Chloe is simply frightened of giving away the after credits sequence here.” He included a GIF showing fans costumed as Superman, Spider-Man, Captain America, and Batman dancing together.
Biggest crossovers of all time, an MCU/DCEU mashup:
While Marvel dubbed Avengers: Endgame one of the largest crossovers of all time, an MCU/DCEU mashup would easily outperform that. Seeing heroes like Superman and Ikaris interact, or even Batman and Captain America, would be a lot of fun. Of course, fans shouldn’t expect to see a film of that magnitude anytime soon, since both series are intent on forging their own paths. With superheroes dominating nearly every facet of pop culture these days, it’s hardly unexpected that some projects wind up referencing others. Marvel and DC are two of the most well-known brands in the superhero field today, and Eternals has found a way to bring them together… sort of. For the time being, the only link between the two is people who have worked on both MCU and DCEU films, but as Zhao stated, we never know what the future holds. Perhaps Gunn and Zhao will one day find a method to bring them all together on a far greater scale.
