James Gunn is one of the most renowned entities in the Hollywood entertainment industry. His career in show business began when he became the lead vocalist of the band The Icons, which he founded in 1989. Soon after The Icons disbanded, he embarked on his filmmaking journey and has not looked back since.

Having begun as a filmmaker with Troma Entertainment, James Gunn now shares the responsibility of being co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran. Safran and Gunn assumed their positions in November 2022. Although they are two of the most skilled people for this position, so far the studio has not seen much in terms of financial profit.

No DC Studios Movie Has Touched the $400 Million Mark Ever Since James Gunn Became Co-CEO

James Gunn has given Hollywood some of the best movies to date, not to mention some of the biggest blockbusters too. The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is one such movie series that has managed to enthrall people with new sequel since the release of the original movie.

That being said, the DC Studios have not doing particularly well ever since James Gunn and Peter Safran have been heading the company. Since they took up their positions, four DCEU movies, namely, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, have been released.

Unfortunately, none of these four movies have even managed to earn more than $400 million at the box office. Even Black Adam, which was released in October last year before Gunn and Safran became the heads of the studios, only managed to gross $390.3 million. That makes it the highest-grossing movie in the past six years of DC’s filmmaking.

This is quite a contrast to the franchise’s predicament when Zack Snyder was still working with it. The highest-grossing movie of DCEU is James Wan’s Aquaman, which grossed $1.14 billion worldwide. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’s performance at the box office will decide whether or not it will overtake Black Adam or not.

The Reason Behind DCEU Films’ Poor Performance

It has been more than a year since James Gunn and Peter Safran announced that the franchise will be getting a reboot that will be known as the DCU. This might be the reason behind the poor performance of the DCEU films. Fans might not see the point of watching these movies as the DCEU characters will not be carried into the reboot.

This added to the fact that the audience is having superhero fatigue considering the overall decline in the performance of the superhero genre. For instance, some of the recent MCU films might also be a part of the reason why the DCEU movies have not done well. Hopefully, the DCU reboot will be able to change that.
