James Gunn Wanted Stan Lee to be Part of His Final Marvel Movie Before His Death Due to Congestive Heart Failure
The digital release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now available. Recently, the movie’s deleted scenes and a list of cameo appearances were both made public.
For the audience to say goodbye to the cast, James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, wrote the script and directed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with Chris Pratt as Star-Lord/Peter Quill. Fans were moved and pleased with how their stories were resolved, and the film was well-received at the box office.
James Gunn wrote Lambshank for Stan Lee
Stan Lee was regarded as the face of Marvel Comics and had made a cameo in every movie of the MCU until 2019’s Avengers: Endgame when he passed away in 2018. But Marvel Studios have been cautious about continuing the tradition outside of material already filmed.
Recently, director-writer James Gunn, who is now the co-CEO of DC Studios, shared that the character from the third part of Guardians of the Galaxy he voiced; Lambshank, was the character he had written for Stan Lee.
He said, “But I originally wrote Lambshank, the character that I played, for Stan Lee because I wrote the movie before Stan passed on. And I knew he was also getting much older and it’d be harder to bring him to Atlanta to shoot, so I did a character that I could just animate and then have him do the voice and have a little Stan Lee-like face on that character. But unfortunately, Stan passed, who I really enjoyed working with and directing so many times through these movies.”
The director had turned in his script’s first draft for the third part of the trilogy back in 2018 after which he was fired as his controversial tweets started to resurface online and, in November, Lee passed away. Gunn was hired back by Disney and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was his last Marvel movie as he now heads DC. Talking about Lambshank, Gunn said, “I was screaming at something scary behind you, not you. You look really cool…”

James Gunn hints at Guardians of the Galaxy’s potential spinoff
The post-credits cliffhanger of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 sent the fans into a frenzy as it read, The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return. The audience members believed that what that statement meant was Chris Pratt’s Star Lord would possibly appear in The Kang Dynasty, and Secret Wars but it turns out that Gunn and Pratt had different ideas.
According to reports by ComicBook, Gunn has revealed that he and the actor have had conversations about a possible spinoff starring Star-Lord which will be set on Earth in an unfamiliar territory akin to how Captain America found himself in his post-First Avengers appearance.
The reports further suggested that Pratt and Gunn had a vision to paint a contrasting picture of Star-Lord as an alien to modern Earth, metaphorically referring to him as a ‘fish out of water in just… regular water.’ Even though James Gunn had confirmed that the third part of Guardians was his final contribution to the MCU, he would very much like to see his and Pratt’s idea on the big screen.

The MCU’s successful movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had a very unique world record set under its name, which was the record for the most makeup appliances used in a single film with more than 23,000 prosthetics used by more than 1,000 actors. The Grinch had held the record for the same for over 20 years.
Lindsay MacGowan, Legacy FX co-founder, shared with Deadline, “We always knew that it was going to be a lot because when you’re reading the script, and you’re designing the characters, you’re kind of like, ‘This could be a big movie…’ I don’t think any of us truly understood the sheer volume of work that was done until we were there.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now available for digital purchase and it comes on Blu-ray and DVD in August.
