James Gunn’s Fans Are Convinced Josh Brolin’s Refusal to Play Green Lantern Is a Good Thing and Their Logic is Quite Compelling
- Josh Brolin and Matthew McConuaghey have turned down the offer to star as Hal Jordan in James Gunn's Lanterns.
- Fans are not disappointed with this news at all as they believe that both of these actors are not fit for the role.
- Fans' perspective is logical because portraying Green Lantern in a series could mean long term commitment, and both of these actors are quite old now.
James Gunn’s reboot of DC Films is looking to start strong, but things do not seem to be going too well for the studio lately. As of now, the studio is looking for an A-lister for the role of Hal Jordan in the Lanterns series. The character was been previously portrayed once by Ryan Reynolds before he began his successful run as Deadpool, and it is safe to say that the movie Green Lantern quite literally tanked.
Although the hiring process for the Lanterns series has been going strong on the writing and the showrunning front, the same cannot be said about the casting process. It was reported that Josh Brolin was tapped for the role of Hal. However, it was recently revealed that he is not interested. Fans believe that this is for the best and their perspective is understandable.
Josh Brolin Has Turned Down the Offer of Playing Hal Jordan in James Gunn’s Lanterns
Soon after taking over the DC Studios as the co-chiefs, Peter Safran and James Gunn revealed that they would be overhauling the way the franchise was moving. They came up with a reboot of the franchise and renamed it the DC Universe from DC Extended Universe (DCEU). This reboot is their game plan to bring the superhero franchise back on track and the first movie, Superman is all set to be released in 2025.
One of their other projects is Lanterns, which will focus on Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, a character that is rather unexplored in the live-action format. Since Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of the character did not yield the best results and he is now busy with the MCU, Hal had to be recast, and things are not looking good on that front so far.
Getting to be a part of a franchise as great as the DC Universe might seem to be a great opportunity even for an A-lister. However, every creative knows what is best for them and Josh Brolin seems to believe that it is best if he does not portray Hal in the series.
Earlier this month, The Insneider reported that Brolin was being eyed for the role and if he were to decline, the studio would offer it to Matthew McConaughey. Recently, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that both of the actors have turned down the role. However, fans do not seem to be bothered by this news at all and they have even offered a reason for why they believe Brolin not taking the role is good.
Fans Are Alright with Josh Brolin’s Decision Not to Take the Role in Lanterns
Considering how good Brolin is at what he does, some would think that fans would be disappointed and consider it a loss that he refused to play Hal. That does not seem to be the case as they are convinced it is for the best, because the Dune star is quite old.
This could mean that he might not be able to commit to a role that will probably have to be played for a decade or more. Not to mention the work that goes into such projects that demand action scenes. Here is what some of them had to say:
Fans’ perspective is understandable as many of them have expressed their thoughts about Brolin and McConaughey not being up for this kind of commitment. The Men in Black actor has already done a great job at portraying Thanos in the MCU. In addition to this, he has starred as Cable in Deadpool 2 and DC’s Jonah Hex in an eponymous movie. So, his not taking this role seems right.
