Jason Momoa reprised his role as Arthur Curry through Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, and his film’s opening weekend looked like the sequel won’t be able to make a spot among the highest-grossing DC films. However, Aquaman 2 is still in theatres and has surpassed some unexpected superhero movies, including The Flash.

Ezra Miller’s The Flash came out last year, introducing fans to Supergirl for the first time in a live-action movie. The project received mixed reviews but earned $108.1 million at the domestic box office. Whereas Momoa’s Aquaman 2 has now hit $108.2 million globally, dethroning The Flash from its spot.

Following the first movie’s narrative, Jason Momoa continued his underwater adventure through Aquaman 2. The first movie came in 2018 crafted by James Wan and emerged as the biggest DC movie of all time with a $1.1 billion global haul. Expectations were incredibly high from the sequel, but considering its reception, Aquaman 2 doesn’t seem to be breaking the bank when compared to Aquaman.

However, the current box office collection of Amber Heard‘s film has now become notable as it has pulled down the unexpected Marvel and DC films.

Ezra Miller‘s The Flash, which came last year, made enough headlines over its storyline and visual effects but has again found itself in the spotlight for being dethroned by Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. Momoa’s film has the potential to hit $400 million globally as Aquaman 2 has made $375.1 million at the global box office (via Box Office Mojo).

The sequel focuses on Arthur allying with his brother Orm (played by Patrick Wilson) to defeat Black Manta (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) whose only motive is to destroy the hero and everything related to him. The adversary has a strong desire to crush Aquaman and his kingdom, for which he wields the power of the mythic Black Trident.

Before Aquaman 2 arrived on the silver screen, fans were upset about Heard’s screen time in the film. However, the director clarified that the sequel was never about Arthur and Mera but about Aquaman and his brother Orm. Wan crafted a buddy comedy, and since the movie is out, even the actress expressed her gratitude to fans through Instagram for supporting their film.

Marvel and DC released some of their anticipated movies last year, but their reception and box office collection was nothing less than a shocker. Movies like The Marvels, Blue Beetle, Shazam: Fury of Gods, and The Flash failed to thrill fans the way superhero movies typically do, earning them mixed reviews.
