Fan theories pile up as Joe Locke’s teen’s true identity is revealed on Agatha All Along
In the fifth episode of Marvel Studios’ Agatha All Along, the true identity of Teen was revealed. The episode ended with a big cliffhanger, which revealed that Teen is Billy Maximoff, the son of Scarlet Witch, i.e., Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff. However, it was further explained in the sixth episode that Billy Maximoff’s spirit moved into the body of a 13-year-old boy, William Kaplan.
The episode starts at William Kaplan’s Bar Mitzvah, followed by his magic-themed party. The parents hired a fortuneteller, none other than Lila Calderu, played by Patti Lupone, and she goes on to discover that Kaplan’s life is divided into two parts. After discovering about his life, Kaplan gets anxious, freaks out, and leaves her tent but forgets his jacket behind. At this moment, the audience is shown that it is Lilla who has put the sigil on Billy. (via ComicBook Club)
William Kaplan gets his jacket back, and then the party goes haywire as they are signaled that something is happening in Westview. This can be traced back to the finale of WandaVision when Wanda is releasing the members of Westview. Kaplans’ truck crashes into a tree, and while the parents survive, William Kaplan dies. On the other end, Wanda was in the process of saying goodbye to her kids. But somehow Billy Maximoff’s spirit enters William Kaplan’s body. It’s like his soul created from magic survived and found an empty vessel (Kaplan’s body) to inhabit.
When Kaplan wakes up, he has amnesia and does not remember anything before the accident until three years later when he starts to investigate Agatha Harkness to access the Witches’ Road to find his brother. Ralph Bohner, played by Evan Peters, tells him and his boyfriend about Agatha, Wanda, and Vision, and towards the end of the episode, Kaplan can join the dots and say he is Billy Maximoff. He just needs to find his brother Tommy. Fans on Reddit have shared their opinion on the situation, stating
However, a user wrote that it’s going to be wild if that happens. Another one noted that ‘oh, that would be sinister’ while a third user had noted, ‘I hadn’t even considered this but holy crap’. A Reddit user went on to comment that the scene broke them, explaining that the fans just want Billy and William to be happy and are rooting for both of them. It will be interesting to see how the story unfolds in the next episode and whether Billy will be able to find his brother.
Agatha All Along’s showrunner details about introducing Billy Maximoff
During an interview with Deadline, showrunner Jac Schaeffer was asked about the origin of the idea of introducing Billy Maximoff in Agatha All Along. To which she said,
She goes on to explain that she remembers being in the writer’s room and trying to figure out who this young man is and how they can portray him the best. She added that the structure they came up with is that he’s an eager fanboy who loves witchcraft and is studying at the feet of these women. The show-runner noted that it was fun to be able to bake it around Teen’s character’s complexity and darkness.
Jac Schaeffer mentioned in the interview that it was really important for her that Agatha All Along would be Agatha’s story, but once the piece of Wiccan clicked, it felt right.
