Jim Carrey May Have Retired from Hollywood But Actor Isn’t Giving Up on Sonic 4: ‘I’m definitely open to the idea’
- Jim Carrey starred in some of the most critically and commercially successful films before retiring.
- He broke out of his hiatus the first time for the Sonic franchise and would not mind doing it again for Sonic 4.
- He quipped that he returned for Sonic 3 because he needed the money.
Jim Carrey does not seem very eager to let go of his reputation as the genius Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic franchise and is willing to appear in Sonic 4. In fact, that is pretty much the only role that he has been playing since 2020 when he appeared on Saturday Night Live and the TV series Kidding.
The last time Carrey appeared in a movie that was not from the Sonic franchise was in 2016, and so far there have not even been any rumors of him making a big-screen comeback with a different role. So, the chances of him returning in a movie are looking less and less, but fans need not worry because there is a good chance that he will return as Dr. Robotnik.
Jim Carrey might return as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic 4
For years, Jim Carrey was an impressionist stand-up comedian before moving to Hollywood. Even then, he did not become immediately successful. His stint as a regular cast member of the sketch comedy TV show In Living Color helped him land some major film roles.
Carrey made his breakthrough in the industry with a string of commercially successful films like Ace Venture: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber, and The Mask. This marked the turning point in his career. Although he was largely typecast as a comedic actor, he also gave brilliant drama performances in movies like The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
After the release of Sonic 2 in 2022, the Bruce Almighty star told Access Hollywood (via Variety) that he was done with acting. Despite this, he returned in the recently released Sonic 3 which was a huge surprise for fans. In fact, he also teased his probable return in Sonic 4 during an interview with Cinema Today. He said:
I’m definitely open to the idea. Generally, they come to me with the next idea and [if] it sounds fun, I’ll do it. I certainly love this crew and I love the fans. There’s a lot of really great energy around it.
If he does end up appearing in the next Sonic film, it’s a clear sign for fans that it’s going to be worth watching. After all, it would take something exceptional to bring Carrey out of his acting hiatus.
Jim Carrey claimed he returned to Sonic 3 because he needed “the money”
Carrey is not the first Hollywood actor who has gotten out of retirement for a role. In fact, to be fair, he is only in his early 60s which is still young in comparison to Michael Caine who retired at 90, and Clint Eastwood who is showing no signs of retiring at 95. That said, it is obviously the Man on the Moon star’s choice if he wants to only do one particular role for the rest of his career.
That, however, does not stop people from wondering what led Carrey to return to come back as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic 3. When an AP Entertainment reporter asked him about it on the red carpet, he said:
I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.
So, fans are to believe that Carrey, who has starred in some of the biggest blockbusters, returned to acting for money? With his knack for comedy, it is hard to tell if he is telling the truth or simply playing around. Either way, as long as he keeps portraying Eggman, fans hardly have anything to complain about.
