After Anti-Trans Tweets Backlash, JK Rowling Threw Shade at Emma Watson for Supporting Controversial Trans Youth Charity
Thanks to legendary author JK Rowling, millions of people have grown up reading, and watching Harry Potter, and some others grew up bringing the wizarding world to life. However, in 2020, all these people were taken aback upon discovering their beloved writer’s views about the trans community.
Even some of the actors who played key roles in the Harry Potter franchise spoke out against Rowling’s inappropriate comments. Emma Watson, who is a renowned actress and activist, also indirectly expressed her views on the matter. However, some time ago, JK Rowling shaded Watson for supporting a trans youth charity whose trustee had a rather controversial background.
JK Rowling Had a Swing at Emma Watson
Over the years, there have been many instances when English actress Emma Watson has been seen taking a stand for women’s rights. She is also a supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. Consequently, she had encouraged her fans to donate to a London-based trans youth charity called Mermaids.
Rowling has been a critic of the charity for a long time and in 2022, she called its supporters “part of an authoritarian, misogynist, homophobic movement” in a tweet. She also wrote:
“This is a charity that’s achieved unprecedented influence in the UK. They couldn’t have achieved it without the money and public support of certain corporations and celebrities, who eagerly boosted them even though the red flags have been there for years.”
In late 2022, it was found out that as a Ph.D. student in 2011, Dr. Jacob Breslow, a trustee of Mermaids, had attended a B4U-ACT conference. This organization is known to support the right of pedophiles to live “in truth and dignity”. Dr. Breslow resigned his trusteeship in 2022 but that didn’t stop JK Rowling from shading Watson.
JK Rowling Has Been Opposed by Wizarding World Actors
JK Rowling has been publicly called out for anti-trans comments she made in June 2020. She had begun by criticizing the gender-neutral language used by an article to talk about menstruation. Then, she went on to defend herself against people who called her anti-trans.
A couple of days later, the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them writer also published an essay expressing her views about the trans community. This move was followed by Emma Watson, who was once Rowling’s favorite Harry Potter star, who tweeted a thread in support of trans fans. She wrote:
Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are. I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are.
The Little Women star then went on to share the links to trans community supporting organizations that she donates to, and encouraged her fans to donate if they can. One of these organizations was Mermaids. Eddie Redmayne, who played the lead character in the Fantastic Beasts franchise also insisted that he is against Rowling’s anti-trans views.
