Many fans believe Marvel peaked with the Infinity Saga where Thanos, played by Josh Brolin, wreaked havoc and made every superhero’s life a living hell. With the power of the infinity stones and the coming together of all superheroes from every corner of the world, it felt like the MCU saga was finally reaching its culmination. Despite a few movies not working well, the entire overarching storyline delighted fans immensely and consolidated Marvel’s position as a box office juggernaut.

Will Thanos Make a Comeback?

Marvel's Supervillain kang the Conqueror
Jonathan Majors as Kang

After Jonathan Majors was found guilty in his domestic abuse trial, it left a big hole in the Marvel plan for the current and upcoming saga. Majors was going to be the central villain Kang in this segment of the MCU since the multiverse directly culminated in his variants attacking the planet, setting up the stage for more variants of other beloved superheroes to enter the main dimension.

It seems like Marvel has to devise a better plan and find a central villain for the Avengers to fight. Kingpin is said to be one option as we see him making Echo and Daredevil’s life difficult in the series. However, reviving Thanos from the dead has been a point of hot debate in fandoms. In Avengers: Endgame, the Earth’s mightiest heroes beat Thanos once and for all and banished him to an alternate space. So, how would he come back, and if so, what new storyline will Marvel create for his return?

Josh Brolin, the hunk who plays Thanos on screen, pitched in his two cents about portraying the iconic villain of Marvel again on screen. Brolin will next be seen in the second installment of the superhit movie Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve. The actor has been involved in the project since the first movie and will reprise his role as Gurney Halleck in Dune: Part Two. In an interview with ComicBook.Com, Brolin expressed,

“You know, I hear kind of like through the grapevine, that they’re gonna bring him back. And there’s the What If…? series and that’s a different kind of Thanos and all that. But I don’t know in the Marvel world whether they’re going to bring him back, but I didn’t know that he was the most killed-off Marvel villain … You learn something new every day.”

As Brolin mentioned, Thanos has also had a few alternate storylines in the animated What If…? series that explore different dimensions and versions of the heroes we know. In Marvel’s attempt to reform a widely hated villain, they showed Thanos as a good guy in the first season of the show. Brolin voiced the character in the episode What if… T’Challa became a Star-Lord. The episode showcased how just one character’s destiny if changed, can impact others around him too.

Who Can Replace Kang?

Ultron
Ultron

The debate to replace Kang with an even mightier villain has kept the Marvel fandom busy. Many characters from the comics have come up in conversations who seem like a better choice to helm this Marvel saga. Like Thanos, fans also want Ultron to maybe make a comeback and manipulate the situation further. While it would be a similar villain, the heroes will definitely be different since we will see Young Avengers take the reins this time. The older heroes including Iron Man, Captain America and Black Widow are gone for good, and now the likes of Spider-Man, Ms Marvel, and America Chavez will be in the forefront.

Other villains including Doctor Doom, Annihilus, and The Beyonder are also great choices for spreading destruction. They seem less likely to be central villains since they have not yet been introduced to the viewers. To choose a villain for the overarching saga, the character needs to be a known name among the masses so they understand the level of evil they can bring.
