However, things ended for good when Bieber married Hailey Baldwin in 2018 and Gomez moved on in her life too. The song Sorry became a huge success as Justin Bieber sings about forgiveness from a lover who he has wronged a few times. Many believed it was aimed at Selena Gomez, much like many other songs from the Purpose album that included potential nods to his romance with the Vulnerable singer.

Sorry was written by writer Justin Tranter, who is known to collaborate with the likes of Gomez and Nick Jonas too. Being friends with Gomez first, Tranter thought it was important to tell her about Bieber’s upcoming track. He recalled in an interview,

When we knew ‘Sorry’ was happening and when it was official and Justin cut it, we called her and said, ‘Just so you know, this song’s coming out,’ because these are real people’s lives. This is real life, and you have to be real with your friends.

With poignant lyrics like “Yeah I know that I let you down, Is it too late to say I’m sorry now?” and “I know you know that I made those mistakes maybe once or twice. By once or twice I mean maybe a couple of hundred times,” Bieber possibly tried to tug at ex-girlfriend Gomez’s heartstrings with this song.

In 2015, following their breakup, it was reported that Bieber and Gomez were working on a song together that would chart the history of their relationship. Even though the pair moved on from each other, they felt that the song would be cathartic and a way to give fans an insight into their equation. According to Vogue, the song was titled Strong, and the song’s lyrics included Bieber singing,

You’re the only one I’m really missing. Nobody else would be forgiving, cause of all the love that you give me.

It was a duet that the former lovers recorded separately. Gomez sang,

Wishing I was better at this damn thing, cause it’s just been too long and I can’t change.

However, the song was soon deleted. The reasons for the same remain unknown. Though the singers have hinted at each other in various respective songs, fans’ dreams of seeing them together for a song remain unfulfilled.
