“Was someone holding Kate Winslet’s children hostage?”: One of the Worst Movie of Emma Stone and Hugh Jackman Faced Awful Response From Hollywood
Emma Stone is a perfect example of beauty with brains in Hollywood. The 34-year-old actor recently made headlines with her terrific performance in her upcoming movie Poor Things. The fantasy comedy-drama was praised during the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Emma Stone collaborated with Charles B. Wessler and Peter Farrelly on Movie 43. The comedy-drama had a great star-studded cast including maximum A-Listers from the entertainment industry. Movie 43 was met with a not-so-good audience reception and even failed to secure a spot both in the good books of the critics and at the box- office.
Emma Stone’s Movie 43 Attracted The Worst Reviews In The History Of Hollywood
Emma Stone and Hugh Jackman’s Movie 43, an anthology of 12 stories, was released in 2013. Conceived by Charles B. Wessler, the anthology had some of the biggest and brightest actors on board from Hollywood. But famous movie critic David Edelstein from the New York Magazine was not at all impressed by the short stories, instead he criticized the Hollywood A-listers for becoming a part of the slapstick comedy drama.
In a feature for the reputed media outlet Vulture, the American movie critic blasted the stars and said-
“Was someone holding Kate Winslet’s children hostage? Threatening to release compromising pictures of Emma Stone? Did Richard Gere or Hugh Jackman have gambling debts?”
While talking about the scatological comedy, he even mentioned-
“It would have been fun in a sadistic way to put a camera on the actors as they watched the finished film for the first time and tremblingly called their agents. I need to say at this point that I love everything about Movie 43 except the movie. I love scatological comedy — the squirmier the better — and I love the idea of big stars taking a day or two out of their busy schedules to work blue in a naughty revue”
Movie 43 took almost a decade to come into production because of the huge number of reputed actors on board which led to date issues and as well as some actors even attempting to leave the project mid-way. Producer Charlie B. Wessler was criticized for his star-studded project that went on to attract negative reviews from critics and movie experts. After almost a decade, the movie was picked up by Relativity Media for production.
Producer Charles B. Wessler And Peter Farrelly Talk About Movie 43
During an interview with the media outlet Female.com in 2013, producer duo Charles B. Wessler and Peter Farrelly spoke about Movie 43. While talking about their project they mentioned the daunting task of getting A-listers from Hollywood for the comedy-drama. Peter Farrelly said-
“The next step was getting some big actors signed on. And we really wanted people who you don’t expect to see doing outrageous comedy like this. And the funny thing is, they wanted to do it, because it was short – just two days out of their schedules, where they’re not doing the same kinds of things they always do. They could step out of themselves and make people laugh.”
Charlie B. Wessler spoke about calling the agents of the reputed actors, he said-
“I started sending scripts around to agents and calling them and saying, “Here’s 15 scripts. You decide what you want to submit to your clients.” Everybody at these agencies were a little shy going to their clients with this INSANE material. So we had to get a couple of friends to get them onboard first.”
He further mentioned-
“Hugh Jackman was the first guy to sign on. I had met him at a friend’s wedding. And we needed an actress, so we called Kate Winslet’s agent, Hylda Queally, who’s really wonderful and open to two nitwits calling her. A lot of agents were terrified of this thing, but people like Hylda totally embraced it and thought it was funny. They knew it was tricky, but also that it could turn out to be really funny. She gave it to Kate, and a couple of weeks later, she said she’d do it.”
The ensemble cast of Movie 43 includes- Emma Stone, Kate Winslet, Gerard Butler, Halle Berry, Chris Pratt, Uma Thurman, Naomi Watts, Anna Faris, Richard Gere, Josh Duhamel, Terrence Howard, Elizabeth Banks, and Kristen Bell.
With an IMDb rating of 4.3 out of 10, Movie 43 is available on Netflix for streaming.
