Directed by Francis Lawrence, Constantine, starring Keanu Reeves, is a superhero horror movie loosely based on DC Comics/Vertigo Comics Hellblazer graphic novels. The movie saw Reeves playing a cynical exorcist with the ability to perceive and communicate with half-angles and half-demons in their true form. Reeves’ character could also travel between Earth and Hell. Upon release, the movie received mixed reviews from critics and the audience.

But over the years, Constantine has garnered a cult following, with fans enjoying watching Reeves play a cynical exorcist on screen. Reportedly, one of the reasons why the movie received mixed responses was because it had changed various aspects of the source material. From the location of the movie to the appearance of Reeves’ character, to the psychic ability that was given to Constantine, a lot was different from the comics, which did not sit right with the fans. However, it’s Keanu Reeves, and when a sequel was announced, fans were equally excited to watch him play the exorcist yet again.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura gives a positive update on Keanu Reeves starrer Constantine 2

Lorenzo di Bonaventura spoke to Comic Book at the San Diego Comic-Con and revealed that the script for Constantine 2 is finished. He was asked if he’s got the time to take a look at it, to which he admitted that he was scared to read it. The producer added,

You know it’s in my inbox right now. Funny enough, I’m too scared to read it though. I want it to be good so bad. I’ll probably read it in the next few days when I get on an airplane.

Akiva Goldsman replaced the original screenwriters, Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello, as the writers for the movie. The sequel was announced back in September 2022, with the filmmaker and Keanu Reeves returning to reprise their roles, but there had been no updates until now. The plot of the movie is kept under wraps to keep the fans anticipating the movie; however, Goldsman shared back in February via CBR:

The character is very much Keanu Reeves and the way he and Francis Lawrence saw the world of good and evil, and the wonderful and authentic noir where there is a world behind the world of good and evil coexist with our world up close.

Discussing Film’s X account has now stated that not only is the script for the highly awaited Constantine 2 done, but it’s going to ‘be very R-rated’. Just like Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux, and an animated movie based on The Jurassic League are a part of DC Elseworlds, it is expected that Constantine 2 will also be released under DC Studios’ Elseworlds label.

Keanu Reeves was ‘tired’ and ‘gave up’ on getting Constantine 2 off the ground

The actor, who is regarded as one of the nicest men in the industry, is one of the most loved actors. His work has always been lauded by the critics as well as the audience, who still find themselves revisiting Reeves’ Constantine despite it receiving mixed reactions upon release.

However, fans are not the only ones who revisit the movie, but the lead actor, who, upon his appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, revealed that he’d like to play the character again. Reeves said,

I would love to play John Constantine again from the Constantine movie.

He also went ahead to reveal that he tried to get the sequel off the ground quite a few times, but no one was interested. However, the recent update clarifies that it’s finally happening, with Reeves returning to play a character he has long desired to reprise.

Actress Tilda Swinton, who played Gabriel in the original movie, revealed in an interview with Inverse that she might not be returning for the sequel. She revealed,

I am sorry to have to tell you that I know nothing about this sequel except that I’ve heard it’s happening. Unless they’re very late in calling me, I don’t think Gabriel will be flapping his/her wings. I did hear a rumor—I don’t know if you heard it—that Keanu Reeves was going to play Gabriel. Which would be beautiful.

As of now, the highly anticipated movie is in its script stage, with a confirmation that the filmmaker and the lead actor are returning for their respective parts. But this can be seen as a positive sign as fans wait to see Reeves back in action as a cynical exorcist. Constantine 2 does not have a release date yet.

Constantine is available on VOD on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
