Keira Knightley Felt Like a Sex Symbol After Pirates of The Caribbean

In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, Keira Knightley revealed that she felt stuck with the identity of a sex symbol after her role in 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Keira Knightley was only 18 when she became an international star after starring against Johnny Depp in the Pirate of the Caribbean franchise.

Along with the fame came a lot of uncomfortableness for Knightley as she developed an image of a sex symbol in the industry. Talking about this, Knightley said that playing an object of desire like Elizabeth Swan at such a young age left her feeling more stuck and constrained in the industry.

“[Elizabeth Swann] was the object of everybody’s lust,” Knightley continued. “Not that she doesn’t have a lot of fight in her. But it was interesting coming from being tomboyish to getting projected as quite the opposite. I felt very constrained. I felt very stuck.”

Keira Knightley also added that most of her movies after that were focused on improving her image in the industry. Even though Knightley starred in two more Pirates of the Caribbean films, in 2006’s Dead Man’s Chest, and 2007’s At World’s End, she also worked in other movies like Pride and Prejudice (2005), and Atonement (2007), the latter of which even helped her earn an Oscar nomination for Best Actress only at the age of 20.
