As reported by TMZ, reality star Kim Kardashian, 42, purchased the beautiful historical purple amethyst and diamond-encrusted late Princess Diana’s Attallah cross pendant at an auction held by Sotheby’s. Sources told TMZ that Kim K bought the rare jewelry piece for $197,453. According to the auction house, four bidders competed for the cross pendant in the final five minutes of the Sotheby’s auction’s Royal & Noble sale, but eventually, the $1.4B fortune Kardashian secured the bid and now added another legendary piece of jewelry to her collection.
The head of jewelry at Sotheby’s London, Kristian Spofforth, stated,
“We are delighted that this piece has found a new lease of life within the hands of another globally famous name.”
At a charity gala in 1987 in London, the late Princess Diana wore the gem-encrusted bauble with a black-and-purple velvet Catherine Walker gown. The stunning legendary necklace was labeled as the Attalah Cross and was owned by Garrard Jewelry company then.
Importance Of The Princess Diana’s Legendary Attallah Cross Pendant
Reports stated that Garrard, the jeweler who created Princess Diana‘s iconic sapphire engagement ring, created this stunning design of the Attallah cross in the 1920s.
According to Sotheby’s press release,
“The cross-shaped pendant — thought to be a one-off private commission by Garrard for one of their regular clients — is a bold and colorful piece set with square-cut amethysts and accented by circular-cut diamonds. The cross has a total diamond weight of approximately 5.25 carats and measures approximately 136 x 95mm.”
“Jewellery owned or worn by the late Princess Diana very rarely comes on to the market, especially a piece such as the Attallah cross, which is so colourful, bold and distinctive. To some extent, this unusual pendant is symbolic of the princess’s growing self-assurance in her sartorial and jewellery choices, at that particular moment in her life.”
“It is understood that the cross was only ever worn by the princess, and following her death, it was never seen in public again until now.”
Princess Diana was loaned the cross several times over a period of years by the businessman Naim Attallah due to their friendship, who initially purchased it from Garrard in the 1980s.
