Lack of Dialogues Wasn’t Anya Taylor-Joy’s Biggest Challenge on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Another Titanic Task Needed Actress To Take a “big leap of faith”
The highly anticipated Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a post-apocalyptic action-adventure movie that is the fifth movie in the Mad Max franchise. The movie stars Chris Hemsworth, Anya Taylor-Joy, Alyla Browne, and Tom Burke. It is known to be a spin-off and prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, which starred Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron.

The movie premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it received a positive response from critics who praised George Miller’s direction, screenplay, action sequences, and cinematography. Along with praising the musical score of the movie, critics especially mentioned that the performances of the cast were spectacular. Critics have, however, pointed out that Anya Taylor-Joy only had a very few lines, and now, the actress shared her experience as well.
Anya Taylor-Joy opens up about working on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga with minimal dialogues
During an interview with MTV, actress Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays Imperator Furiosa in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, opened up about the challenges she faced while working on the movie. The actress was asked who amongst her and her co-star Chris Hemsworth was more antithetical towards their characters, to which she said,
I was never intimated by the lack of words she said. It was more when I first met George; I realized that he had a very strict idea of how he wanted me to hold my face for a large portion of the movie. And that only really allowed me my eyes with which to communicate. It was a big leap of faith. But if you’re going to take a leap of faith like that, it’s with George Miller and in a Mad Max movie.

Anya Taylor-Joy is regarded as one of the most exceptional actresses in the industry and has been appreciated for her work over the years. Her fans waited diligently for the upcoming movie to premiere, and critics have stated that her performance does not disappoint. On her appearance on Live Kelly and Mark, she once again addressed her challenges about working on the movie with minimal dialogue. Taylor-Joy said,
With every job, there’s a different hurdle to overcome. With this particular one, George also had a very specific idea of how he wanted to hold my face, which meant he only gave me my eyes, so you’d think it was easy to just sit back and hang out, but the whole time in my eyes I was going. I hope you’re understanding what I’m trying to say.
According to Games Radar, the actress only had 30 dialogues in the movie, and during her interview with the NY Times, she admitted that she has never been more alone than making the movie. Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, who were part of the 2015 movie, had 143 lines between them.
Chris Hemsworth praises co-star Anya Taylor-Joy for her performance
Hemsworth, who plays warlord Dementus in the movie, shared in an interview via Digital Spy that Anya Taylor-Joy turned up with the mindset of her character. He added that the enthusiasm and passion she has for her craft was very evident.

He further said,
Anya was just incredible. I don’t think there are many people on the planet who can tell that amount of story with that amount of depth and nuance, with subtlety and a look.
The Marvel actor also mentioned that the actress did an amazing job and made the character her own, noting that it’s beautiful the way the two performances complement each other so well. The co-actor also claimed that she did a wonderful job portraying a character that Charlize Theron had previously already played in a 2015 movie.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is scheduled for release on May 24, 2024.
