Lady Gaga and Madonna are undoubtedly two of the most popular musicians of all time, and just as iconic as each other, if truth be told. Both of them come from humble backgrounds and had to fight their way to the top. None of it was easy, but they never seemed to back down in the face of obstacles. If anything, they have made even stronger comebacks.
Being contemporaries, sometimes also means that there is competition between two artists. This, however, does not mean that they have to be rivals. Competition can be healthy too. The ebbing and swelling of the tension between Madonna and Gaga give the signs of a rivalry rather than healthy competition. However, some of their most recent comments suggest that the conflict might be one-sided.
Lady Gaga’s Sweet Gesture Shows That She Has No Ill-will Towards Madonna
Madonna started her career as a performer in 1979, Lady Gaga entered the scene more than two decades later. In 2011, when the latter released her second studio album Born This Way, fans were quick to catch on to the fact that the eponymous lead single sounded similar to a song from years ago. This song was Express Yourself from Madonna’s fourth studio album Like a Prayer.
As one can imagine, the media was quick to put a microscope on the situation. The news reached Madonna, who was not exactly gracious with how she handled the situation. After quite a lot of back and forth over the years, they seemed to bury the hatchet when the two singers were photographed embracing after Gaga won an Oscar for A Star is Born in 2019.
Fast forward to 2023, The Edge of Glory singer left a little adorable comment on Madonna’s TikTok video where she was thanking her fans for all the support after she announced her world tour (via X). However, Madonna’s comments during her show in Toronto earlier this year seemed to poking fun at Gaga (via The Independent).
Despite this, during a recent podcast interview on RTE, the Joanne singer claimed that Madonna and Britney Spears are icons that she looks up to. Fans were quick to point out that Gaga is the bigger person for naming the Frozen singer as one of her idols.
Both of the artists Gaga has named are indeed inspirational considering the kind of work they have done over the years. That said, Gaga has once again proved that she does not hold a grudge against the Vogue singer.
Lady Gaga and Madonna Seemed to Hash Out Their Feud Years Ago
This is not the first time Gaga has cited Madonna as one of her biggest inspirations. Despite this, the latter has not been very kind to the Die with a Smile singer in the past even though she was initially very supportive of her.
During an interview on ABC News in 2012, the Material Girl singer claimed that Gaga’s Born This Way was “reductive” considering how similar it sounded to Express Yourself. Gaga clapped back at this criticism stating that there was no similarity between the two songs in an interview with NME (via The List).
In 2015, during an interview with Rolling Stone, the La Isla Bonita singer claimed that there was no bad blood between her and Gaga. In her 2017 Netflix documentary (via The Independent), Five Foot Two, the Bad Romance singer confirmed the same thing.
