“Let’s hear it”: Tom Welling Wants to Make a Smallville Movie After More Than a Decade of the Show Ending

Smallville was one of the initial shows based on the mighty Superman and his story. Starring Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum in central roles, the show was a massive success owing to its modern and contemporary approach to the otherwise mythical story. The show ran for 10 seasons and garnered millions of fans across the world. Even when it came to an end, it was only because the story had run its course and was ready to leave the characters to it.

Will We Have A Smallville Reboot?

As in all Superhero movies and shows, many actors take on the mantle of the said hero in different versions of the story. In the world of Clark Kent aka Superman, Tom Welling is most popular for playing the superhero for the longest time which is 10 years. In the show Smallville, we saw Superman hide his identity from the world all the while shielding people from evil entities. Its success in the live-action sphere opened the doors for Arrow and The Flash series to premiere on The CW.

Smallville ended in 2011 and since then, fans have wondered if they would ever see the OG cast back on screen. Since Welling, many actors have become Superman including Henry Cavill and now David Corenswet. Speaking about the possibility of reprising his role as Superman, Welling appeared on the podcast Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum. The two actors reunited after so many years and reminisced about the time and fame they shared on the show.

The host of the podcast, Michael Rosenbaum, asked Welling if he’d be open to donning the Superman cape again for a Smallville movie or a show in the coming years. Welling seemed excited for the opportunity and replied in the affirmative. He said,

“Of course! I mean listen, I was thinking about this the other day right before we did our Talk Ville Podcast, we were on one of the most successful shows in the history of television like Top 50. From that show, I’ve never gotten an incoming call from anyone involved in that show for further work. I don’t mean to, I’m not saying that I don’t feel bad about that, I don’t harp on anybody about that. But you would think that when you’re successful, you would be continued successful with successful people. But I think the time has changed.”

Moreover, Rosenbaum and Welling have been working on an animated show around the Smallville theme since 2022. The animated chapter is reportedly a revival which will take the story further. There was even an eleventh season of the show which was released as a comic book series. All these instances point to a huge possibility of Smallville returning to our screens in some or the other format.

Will Welling Reprise His Superman Role?

We got the chance to see Welling in the iconic Superman role in the 2019 crossover event with the Arrowverse. Welling and Erica Durance who was Lois Lane on Smallville appeared in a cameo role in the Crisis of Infinite Earths crossover where they represented Earth 167. The exciting appearance shed light on the character’s modern life and how they progressed after the show.

Welling believes in the adage, never say never. Given the fame he received for his role in Smallville, it comes as no surprise that the actor is happy to reprise his role. Fans would even love to see Rosenbaum reprise his role as Lex Luthor since his sinister vibe and personality helped bring the character alive on screen.
