Euphoria actress Hunter Schafer to play Mystique in the upcoming X-Men reboot?

According to an industry insider (@MyTimeToShineHello), Euphoria actress and model Hunter Schafer is being considered to play the role of Mystique in the upcoming X-Men reboot. Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence have portrayed the character also known as Raven Darkhölme in the movies.

Mystique, the shape-shifting mutant, is known for her blue skin and has appeared as both a villain and an anti-hero in the Marvel comics and films. Digital artist Aitesam Farooq created an artwork, which imagines Schafer as Mystique. The first image showcases the actress in the character’s iconic blue skin and Schafer in half and half. An X-Men reboot is currently in development for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. President Kevin Feige shared with Discussing Film when asked how he feels realizing that X-Men and Avengers are coming together on the big screen. He said,

It is extremely emotional, on a personal level, to have done a movie with Hugh Jackman after 25 years and me being a small part of that first X-Men movie. And knowing that, thanks to various corporate studio entity deals, we now have 1000s of characters back—characters I hadn’t frankly thought about in many years because we didn’t have the rights to them.

He added that Marvel Studios’ animated series X-Men ’97 was sort of the first taste of people reuniting with the X-Men mythology and that storyline. Feige noted that the response to the series has excited the studios about bringing the soap opera and the saga of mutants to the MCU.

Hunter Schafer was recently asked about the fan casting, and during an interview with ET, she said that she had seen the pictures, adding that her father texted her about that. The actress noted, ‘That would be cool’ if she gets to play Mystique. Hunter Schafer also shared that she has started filming for the third season of Euphoria, and it feels like a little homecoming to her.

Fans react to Hunter Schafer’s Mystique fan casting

Even though there has been no confirmation from Marvel Studios about the X-Men reboot’s casting, fans usually share their favorite actors as the characters they think are going to fit perfectly in the movie.

Hunter Schafer as Mystique has been surprising, but fans, after the reports of studios eyeing the actress for the part, have reacted to the same.

One user wrote, ‘I saw they’re in talks about it, so Hunter Schafer also needs to play Mystique in the X-Men movies. A trans person playing a shapeshifter assassin is just A+’. Another one wrote, ‘We would be seated for this trans icon.’ A third user mentioned on their X account,

Literally the perfect cast.

While a lot of fans are excited to see how the fan casting of Hunter Schafer would turn out to be, a section of people did not want that to happen because she is a trans actress. But it’s very early to comment on the casting, as the studios haven’t commented on the same.

Schafer will have big shoes to fill if she gets selected for the part. Apart from her, Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink is being eyed for Jean Grey, with Ayo Edebiri for Storm and Jack Champion for Cyclops.

Schafer will be seen next in Mother Mary and the science fiction series Blade Runner 2099.
