Shark Tank is a popular American reality TV show for budding companies with unique ideas who want to expand their businesses. The show’s sharks never exhibit any emotion, and Lori Greiner and Kevin O’Leary are known for being aggressive on the show. They want to test the entrepreneurs’ ability to handle the pressure.
However, during one of the pitches in 2018, the tables were turned. The sharks were seen quite moved and emotional after hearing Kaley, Christian, and Keira Young’s pitch. They had come with their late father’s invention on the show and left everyone speechless with their story. Here’s how the Young family wowed the sharks and broke their hearts at the same time.
What did the Young family pitch on Shark Tank?
Kaley, Christian, and Keira Young are the three kids of Keith Young, a New York City Firefighter and two-time champion on the Food Network series, who invented the chopping board – Cup Board Pro. However, it was his dream to pitch it on Shark Tank. But before he could do it, he passed away. So, his kids decided to continue his legacy. The Cup Board Pro is a chopping board with a detachable bowl for easy cleanup so that it can curb some time in chopping and people can enjoy family time.
Kaley Young explained how Keith Young was getting the prototypes done when they found out about their mother’s cancer. She said,
As he was getting his first prototypes, our mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, and he put everything on hold to be at her side. On Aug. 22, 2012, God called our mom home, and our dad showed us what strength was in every moment he continued to show up for us, and in life in general. He was a true inspiration, like our mom.
The young family further described that their father assisted in the cleanup at Ground Zero after the 9/11 terrorist attack. He died because of the after-effects of the 9/11 attacks, as he suffered from cancer and couldn’t make it. The Cup Board Pro features the insignia of all the firefighters who died in that tragedy.
How the sharks Lori Greiner and Kevin O’Leary reacted to their story?
All of the five sharks – John, Higgins, Mark Cuban, Kevin O’Leary, and Lori Greiner were moved by their story. While Greiner was seen in tears, O’Leary was left speechless. They all came together to jointly offer $100,000 for a 20 percent stake in the business and promised to donate profits to a charity that helps firefighters affected by 9/11.
Cuban even said to the Young family (via USA Today), “You have a million reasons to be proud. Your father will live on forever through each of you and his product.”
Cut to last year, the Young sisters – Kaley and Keira, on a Startup to Storefront podcast, opened up about their experience on Shark Tank and shared how it was when they saw the sharks tearing up. Kaley explained,
It was wild. They asked us to step out for a minute, so it was definitely nerve-wracking cause you don’t know what they are talking about or if they are saying these kids are young or they’re going through a hard time or what. But the camera crew said like they never had any entrepreneurs on set and sharks ask them to leave. It was all too crazy.
But in the end, the Young family got the deal.
