Disney’s Maleficent film sequel is coming to the theaters earlier than we thought it would. It’s now going to release in 2019, further strengthening Disney’s lineup of films this year.

First Poster of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Released by Disney

On Wednesday, the first poster for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil was released by Disney. It will be a follow-up to Angelina Jolie starrer 2014 film about the iconic Disney villain. Alongside the new poster, Disney also revealed that Maleficent 2 release date has been changed to 18 October, 2019. This is about six months prior to its initial release, scheduled for May 29, 2020. Angelina Jolie will return to play the role of Maleficent in the sequel. The character was made famous in Disney’s animated classic, Sleeping Beauty. Maleficent 2 will also see the potential return of Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora. Stars like Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Skrein and Chiwetel Ejiofor will also join the franchise. Joachim Ronning, who helmed Pirates of Carribean and Dead Men tell No Tales will direct the sequel to Maleficent. Running will replace Robert Stromberg, who helmed the original film.

Maleficent came into theaters in 2014, and was among the first films in the huge wave of live-actions films by Disney. The film went on to gross $241 million at the domestic box office, with a massive worldwide total of $758 million.

Now that the release date of Maleficent 2 is set for 18 October, 2019 , it will be the fourth Disney live-action film adaptation by Disney this year. Others films by Disney include Aladdin, The Lion King, and Dumbo.
