Margot Robbie Doesn’t Want Fans to Call Barbie, a $100 Million Comedy, a “Funny Film”: “Make it sound like it doesn’t have a lot going on”
Margot Robbie, the talented actress poised to feature in the highly anticipated Barbie film, emphasized her intention in a recent interview for fans and the media to avoid merely labeling it as a “funny film” or focusing entirely on its humorous aspects. Robbie, noted for her flexibility as an actress, expressed her wish that the film would be recognized for its depth and the profound subjects it addresses. Margot Robbie also added that she was not a fan of Barbie as a child. She isn’t even sure she ever had a Barbie.
Greta Gerwig directed the 2023 fantasy comedy film Barbie, which she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach. It is the first live-action Barbie film after many computer-animated direct-to-video and streaming television films based on Mattel’s Barbie fashion dolls.

Why is Margot Robbie’s Barbie film feminist?
Margot Robbie said Gerwig had the ability to capture the cultural moment in the forthcoming Barbie film. During a recent interview, Gerwig said, “Well, it most certainly is a feminist film.” When asked to explain how so, Robbie interjected, saying,
“To me, that’s like one slice of the pie. It’s a big slice, but I also wouldn’t call it a funny film because that discredits the fact that it’s got a lot of heart, it’s got a lot of emotion, and it’s got a lot of movie references, you know, all this kind of stuff.”
It’s widely acknowledged that Barbie has historically represented a beauty standard that is unattainable for most women, which has had negative impacts, especially on the young-adult demography. In recent years, there has been an increased focus on inclusivity and diversity in Hollywood, aiming to provide representation for marginalized communities and challenge traditional norms. The casting of a male in the role of Barbie is part of a larger effort to promote diversity and investigate the topic of gender identification.

What are Fan’s hopes for the live-action Barbie film?
Barbies were a big part of our upbringing, and the animated films with charming animals were a real joy. And, of course, Barbie has been an icon and a friend to countless children. In the upcoming Barbie film, Margot Robbie plays a doll expelled from Barbieland for not meeting perfection standards.
She embarks on a real-world adventure, discovering life beyond the confines of perfection. Inspired by Greta Gerwig’s style, the movie is expected to tackle feminist themes and address modern-day struggles faced by women, including sexism and gender role expectations. The film promises to offer a thought-provoking narrative, exploring the challenges and empowering journey of its protagonist in a visually captivating and entertaining manner.
Regarding the plot Greta Gerwig commented,
“I also think, I will say, just the existence of this film in the way it does is pretty incredible and is pretty– I mean like when I think of it, this sort of as it stands, this is amazing that this movie is made and it’s made the way it is with Margot as a producer and a star. And what the story is of the movie, it sort of feels unbelievable that it’s been made.” Gerwig then asserts, “It’s feminist in a way that includes everyone. It’s a rising tide lifts all boats version of it.”
Barbie will be released on July 21, 2023, in theaters.
