Margot Robbie’s Barbie Proves Hollywood Wrong as the Movie Beats Across The Spider-Verse Opening Day
The Internet was having a fun debate about Barbie vs Oppenheimer as the release dates of movies clashed. But surprising many, Greta Grewig’s Barbie has broken records and become the movie with the biggest opening yet this year. The dry spell of less-than-best movies this summer has been broken by the pink wave of entertainment. Smashing box-office records, getting rave reviews from the critics, and leaving the audience ecstatic; Barbie seems to have done it all. To reach the spot of having the biggest opening, it had to cross some contenders. And strong contenders as they were, no one really saw this coming.
Barbie Beats Spiderman
Barbie has been an ambitious and experimental project for several reasons. Upon the movie’s announcement, everyone doubted the potential of such a girly script. Up until the release of the second teaser trailer, the movie was believed to be for girls who are at the age of playing dolls. Post extravaganza marketing campaigns, like a Barbie-themed Dreamhouse in Malibu and pink-colored bus stop benches, it made to theater screens. And blew some socks off.

Barbie earned $70.5 Million in its opening. It blasted past Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse‘s opening collection of $51.8 million, making the movie the highest opening of this year. It is the most-loved movie in America in 2023 so far. Earning a collection like this, the movie has already earned almost half of its production budget of $145 million. If the trend of these high theater turnouts for Barbie keeps up, the movie will have the highest three-day opening of 2023.
Road Ahead Seems Pink and Glittery For Barbie
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has a chance at having the biggest opening weekend for a feature directed by a woman. This record is currently held by Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman at $105 million. Which, upon serious estimation can be easily crossed by Barbie.
However, these figures are just domestic box-office numbers. Barbie’s performance overseas can land it in the race to become one of the highest-grossing movies of the year.
Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the movie follows them as they leave their all wonderful Barbieland and make it to the Real World which has some problems and adventures in store for them. The stellar cast ensemble includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Michael Cerra, Simu Liu, John Cena, Dua Lipa, and Will Ferrell, among many others. The screenplay was written by Greta Gerwing in collaboration with Noah Baumbach. It is a satirical representation of Barbie’s life, mixed with an adult’s view of it. The amalgamation results in a package filled with laughter and entertainment.
