Mark Duplass to adapt Creep movies into a TV series
Mark Duplass and Patrick Brice’s Creep and its sequel impressed the audience, that had been waiting for the next installment of the tapes since 2017. And now, according to reports by Variety, the makers are adapting the movies into a series for television titled The Creep Tapes.
The actor shared a cryptic post online with no audio and only words: ‘Coming Soon’. According to Deadline, Duplass Brothers Productions independently produced the series, and now the company is presenting the series to potential buyers with CAA handling world sales. The synopsis of the series reads:
The series is based on a collection of video tapes in the secret vault of the world’s deadliest and most socially uncomfortable serial killer, who hires his victim to film him for the day under pretense. Each episode exposes a new victim from one of the fabled ‘Creep Tapes’.
Back in 2014, at the time of the premiere at SXSW, the makers were asked about their growing fondness for the found footage genre, and Duplass said that they don’t love found footage movies by themselves, but they do appreciate the art form. He added that when they were talking about the movie, it facilitated their ability to run and gun and reshoot when they needed to because their goal was not to overthink it. They wanted the movie to find itself.
As an exploration piece, this was very good. It’s the difference between making a record at home as a musician and going into the studio. We decided to do an at-home version.
Duplass added that Jason Blum, who produced the movie alongside him, had told them that they got the performances right. He mentioned that Blum only agreed to be a part of it because he told them that the performances were right.
Mark Duplass felt the 2017 sequel didn’t live up to its potential
In an interview with IndieWire back in 2020, the actor-filmmaker who starred on The Morning Show alongside Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. He shared that he didn’t believe that the 2017 sequel to Creep was able to reach its potential as expected. He said at the time,
We had to almost kill ourselves to make Creep 2 as good as it was. I appreciate how many like it, but I do feel like it wasn’t as good as it could have been if I’m being perfectly honest. If we’re going to make a third one, it’d better be super inspired. We are trying, and we are putting effort into it, but we are not good enough yet to make it worthwhile, so we are struggling. That’s it.
The writer mentions that they had penned the script twice, but neither of the stories was good enough to adapt. Patrick Brice also touched upon the subject of Creep 3 while speaking to Something Ghoulish (via ComicBook), and added that they found an idea that they are excited about and would like to keep in the movie.
However, maybe those ideas didn’t work back then, but they are now returning to adapt the movies for TV series, and fans are excited.
Creep is streaming on Netflix.
