Mark Ruffalo wants to ‘swap lives’ with Andrew Scott for a day
Robert Downey Jr., Colman Domingo, Jeffrey Wright, Paul Giamatti, Mark Ruffalo, and Andrew Scott appeared in Hollywood Reporter’s Off Script Actor’s Roundtable. During the conversation, the actors were asked if they could change lives for a day with someone at the table, who would that be? Mark Ruffalo and Andrew Scott were the last ones to answer the question where Ruffalo with his endearing smile and eyes asked Scott,
“Would you mind swapping?” Scott answered, “Let’s swap” with Downey adding “Openly swapping”. The Fleabag actor further said, “Let’s make a deal. Anybody wants to ratify this.”
Andrew Scott, who appeared in the recent romantic drama movie All of Us Strangers opposite Paul Mescal was highly appreciated for his performance as Adam. Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel Strangers is based on the movie, which upon its premiere received critical acclaim. The National Board of Review named the movie as one of the top ten independent movies of 2023.
Scott during the conversation was asked about how he felt as an ‘openly gay actor’ in the industry, to which he said,
“I’m going to make a pitch for getting rid of the expressing openly gay. Hear me out. It’s an expression that we actually only ever hear in he media. You’re never at a party and you say ‘this is my openly gay friend.’ Why do we put openly in front of that adjective? We don’t say ‘you’re openly Irish’.”
Andrew Scott concluded that he wouldn’t be at the table talking if the representation hadn’t improved but noted that he does feel that transformation is very important for actors.
Mark Ruffalo says playing a bad guy in Poor Things was ‘liberating’
Emma Stone starrer Poor Things is one of the most talked about movies during the award season with the actress winning a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards for her performance. “The bad ones are the best and I was scared of it. I really didn’t think I could do it. Being a bad person on-screen, breaking whatever expectations. It’s such a flashy party and I had never really dug my teeth into anything like that and man was it freeing and liberating and just joyfully wicked.”
Ruffalo added that nobody had asked him to play a bad guy on-screen so when Duncan offered him the role, he was quick to grab it. He noted that the audience had never seen him play such a character before, which is one of the reasons why characters like these never came his way. The actor is now hopeful of similar roles in the future as well.
Poor Things is available for VOD. All of Us Strangers is available to stream on Max.
