Robert De Niro went on to star in several other Scorsese movies such as Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and Casino. Speaking about his relationship with De Niro, the director told The Hindu:

“Well, in the case of De Niro, we were teenagers together. He’s the only one who really knows where I come from, the people that I knew, and all that. We had a testing ground in the ‘70s, where we tried everything and found that we trusted each other. It’s all about trust and love, really. Very often, if an actor has a lot of power, they could take over your picture. But with him, I never felt that. There was freedom, experimenting, and we were not afraid of anything.”

The trust and love they found in each other regarding their work and even as two people who came from the same background helped De Niro and Scorsese forge a relationship that is one for the books.

Scorsese worked with DiCaprio for the first time in the film Gangs of New York. The actor went on to star in the movies The Aviator and the box-office hit The Wolf of Wall Street. Speaking of their common interests, Scorsese said:

“We really found out that, even though there’s a 30-year difference between us, there are similar sensibilities. He’d suddenly ask me to listen to a record, and it’s Louis Jordan and Ella Fitzgerald! I grew up with it. He’s not bringing me anything new, but he likes it. That’s very interesting to me, to be open that way to older parts of our culture and the newer parts, of course.”

The Shutter Island director went on to say that Leonardo DiCaprio pushes each other’s limits which makes them a great duo at work. Martin Scorsese’s most recent collaboration with the Don’t Look Up star is Killers of the Flower Moon which is now playing in theatres.
