Charlie Cox starrer Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again’s early review rolls in
Daredevil: Born Again is one of the most anticipated shows from Marvel Studios, and finally it’s just a few days away from its premiere. Charlie Cox returns as Matt Murdock, and reviewers have shared their early reactions to the show, as they were lucky enough to watch the first two episodes ahead of its premiere.
The show is described as a ‘dark and sinister’ entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans have wondered if Disney would be able to replicate the same level of grittiness, violence, mature storytelling, and the connection characters had with the audience with their Daredevil: Born Again. But as the early reviews have started to roll in, it can be aptly said that they are pretty much there.
According to X account (@DDevilUpdates), the audience who have been waiting for the show for a long time are in for a treat. They mentioned that the show not only recaptures what made the original series so special but also takes it in a different direction. The user noted that the tone and the grit in Daredevil: Born Again are authentic to the original show, and the writing never felt dissimilar.
Talking about the action in the first two episodes of the show, they mentioned that it feels sharper and better than the Netflix series. Erik Davis from Fandango (via The Direct) shared the review of the first two episodes by stating,
Marvel’s ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ comes out of the gate HOT! Among the strongest starts for a Marvel Studios TV show to date, in my opinion—the first two episodes are terrific, setting up a story that is part court procedural and part all-out brawling. There’s a fight in Episode 1 that is all done in one show with a wild ending—it really kicks off the series in a memorable way.
Rachel Leishman, Assistant Editor at The Mary Sue, wrote that the fight sequences are just as violent as the original show and play with Matt Murdock’s morality in such a poignant and beautiful way. She noted that Cox and D’Onofrio step effortlessly back into their rivalry.
Reading such incredibly positive reviews of just two episodes has increased the excitement of fans.
Daredevil: Born Again directors talk about the inclusion of ‘oners’
Ahead of the release of the show, directors Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson spoke to CBR about the inclusion of oners (one-shot sequences) in the episodes. It has been known as one of the best elements of the original series, and the directors shared that when they got on board, there were no oners. Moorhead explained,
When we came on board, one of the things that Marvel was asking for was basically, ‘What we need to do is make it feel like the Netflix show,’ to which we agreed. One of the things they’re known for is the oner, so it’s like, ‘Give us a oner!’
The director further shared that the sequence was not originally scripted as an oner, but it quickly became one once they pitched it, noting that they just said, ‘That’s the moment.’ Moorhead mentioned that it’s one of the largest punctuation marks they could possibly put on it.
Aaron Moorhead did not hesitate to appreciate everyone involved in the making by stating that every department rocked it. He recalled that it was really hard to shoot, really hard to plan, and also really hard in post-production, but they managed to make it through.
Justin Benson also shared that the prison oner from Netflix’s show Season 3 was one of the biggest inspirations for them, as they studied a lot while developing it. He also extended words of appreciation for the Daredevil team.
Daredevil: Born Again premieres on Disney+ on March 4, 2025.
