SUMMARY
  • Marvel Studios cast Bill Skarsgård as a completely CGI character in one of its flop films.
  • Skarsgård's character went either unnoticed or failed to live up to its potential.
  • Casting Skarsgård in the DCU could definitely benefit James Gunn.

Over the years, Marvel has developed a reputation for underutilizing some of Hollywood’s finest talents. Actors like Christian Bale and Mads Mikkelsen have often found themselves at a disadvantage, whether due to undercooked character arcs or limited opportunities to showcase their acting prowess.

Another such actor is Nosferatu’s Bill Skarsgård. He starred in Eternals, but most people either failed to recognize him in the film or were disappointed by how the studios used him. Either way, this could be good news for James Gunn who is working on rebooting the DCU and could cast someone as talented as Skarsgård in a major role.

Marvel Studios quite literally wasted its chance of putting Bill Skarsgård’s skills to good use

Bill Skarsgård is one of the most talented actors of his generation. He first rose to fame for his role as Pennywise in the horror franchise, It. The films have gained a cult following in the years since their release, and Skarsgård has starred in various projects. However, some of his prominent roles are that of villains.

So far, Skarsgård has starred in two movies related to Marvel characters. The first one of these is Deadpool 2, in which he starred as the mutant Zeitgeist (Axel Cluney). His character could spew acidic vomit and was a part of the X-Force team that Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) had hired. Despite possessing such a unique superpower, his character was short-lived due to the comedic and chaotic nature of the team’s debut mission.

The other film, Eternals was under the Marvel Studios banner and starred him as Kro, a Deviant leader and antagonist. His role was significantly simplified compared to his comic counterpart, to say the least. It was a completely CGI character which is why most people did not even recognize him.

Fans were not impressed with how Marvel wasted The Devil All the Time actor’s potential by not only casting him as a CGI character but also in a poorly-written movie. Here is what some of them have to say:

If Marvel really wanted to cast Skarsgård in a movie, they could have done it in a far better way than whatever they did in Eternals, which turned out to be a flop and made only $402 million (via Box Office Mojo). That said, this was certainly not the first or last time the studio made a bad decision about a good actor.

James Gunn could cast Bill Skarsgård in a major role in the rebooted DCU

Considering the Boy Kills World actor is open to doing superhero movies and has little to none significance in the MCU, James Gunn has the perfect opportunity to cast him as a major character in the rebooted DCU. Even if it is not a major character, at least it could be a supporting one that shows some growth and puts his acting skills to good use.

That said, it would be refreshing to see Skarsgård in a big hero role since has been typecast as the villain one too many times. This is not to say that fans would be unwilling to watch him take up the role of a DCU villain, but he has already played that kind of character a lot of times to attract more attention.

In fact, movies like Villains, Barbarian, Soulmates, and Nine Days show his range outside of his villainous roles which have recently been explored in The Crow reboot and Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu. He could be a good fit for a character like Bruce Wayne or even one like Midnighter and Apollo, which are tortured but have a virtuous edge.
