Massive Update on Selena Gomez’s ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ Sequel Series Reveals Fans Are Truly in For a Treat (Rumored)
- Disney's magical fantasy series Wizards of Waverly Place's success made young Selena Gomez a teen idol.
- Gomez's Wizards Beyond Waverly Place will have 21 episodes, even if fans will only get the first eight together.
- Wizards Beyond Waverly Place will see Alex's younger brother, Justin Russo, mentoring a young wizard named Billie.
Selena Gomez, often seen working her magic as an actress on the screen or charming fans with her impressive songs, once portrayed a magician for a Disney series. The show Wizards of Waverly Place followed Gomez’s character Alex Russo, a teenage wizard living on Waverly Place, training alongside her younger siblings.
Gomez’s fame saw new heights when she began starring in this show. Despite the show’s popularity and good ratings, it was canceled after only four seasons because the actress wanted to pursue more adult roles. Even so, fans had been hoping that they would get to see more of the Russo family someday. Luckily for them, not only a sequel is all set to be released later this year, but it also has something in store that will leave fans delighted.
Selena Gomez’s Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Will Treat Fans Well
Selena Gomez became a teen idol with her role in the teen fantasy series, which was aired between 2007 and 2012. A made-for-TV movie was also aired on Disney Channel in 2009. The film won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Program in 2010. In 2013, Gomez and her co-stars returned for a stand-alone television special The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex.
A decade later, the show is making a comeback as a sequel and spin-off with Alex’s brother Justin Russo (David Henrie) as the lead character. The Calm Down singer will return to the series although the only information available as of now is that she will be guest-starring in the pilot episode. She is also executive producing the show alongside Henrie who will be a series regular.
According to TVLine, the show will have 21 episodes which is a good reason for fans to celebrate. However, there is a catch in this as allegedly, only the first eight episodes will be released together on Disney+, and the rest will probably have a weekly release. That said, the show will premiere just in time for a spooky season so fans will still have abundant to enjoy.
What Is Wizards Beyond Waverly Place About?
While the original show’s major focus was Alex Russo, one of the three Russo siblings with magical abilities, this new sequel series centers on Justin Russo. Justin has left behind his magic powers and started a family as a normal human being.
Justin is peacefully living with his wife Giada (Mimi Gianopulos) and two sons, Roman Russo (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo Russo (Max Matenko) when an accident at WizTech leads to a young wizard Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) showing up at his door seeking his guidance.
This puts Justin in a moral dilemma as he struggles to choose between revisiting his past as a wizard to help Billie or staying away from the Wizard World and continuing his life as it is. Billie also has a bubbly and oversharing best friend Winter (Taylor Cora).
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is set to premiere on October 29, 2024.
