However, the actor wishes to be a part of DCU again, but with a new twist and character. Kinnaman desires to play a darker and more complex foe in the rebooted DCU.

Joel Kinnaman Plans To Join DCU Again After Rick Flag’s Death

One of the most discussed deaths in The Suicide Squad was of Joel Kinnaman‘s Rick Flag. Despite the character being exceptionally skilled and a stunning fighter, he was tragically killed by John Cena‘s Peacemaker. Many fans even rebelled against the death of Rick, however, James Gunn presented his explanation for ending Kinnaman’s iconic character.

Though Rick Flag has been killed, Joel Kinnaman has a plan to come back into the superhero world, but with a new look and personality. During the Post-Credit Podcast, the Silent Night star discussed the death scene in The Suicide Squad and mentioned being content with the death of his character. Kinnaman said:

“Yeah [I was like ‘WTF, James?’]. I love that scene, though, it was such a good way to go. But, for sure, maybe I’ll come back and play some nasty villain in a couple of years.”

Since the actor has expressed his desire to play a formidable adversary in the DCU, and because James Gunn is frequently collaborating with the same actors, this hints at the possibility of Joel Kinnaman’s return in the rebooted franchise. There are chances for the actor to even return as a Rick Flag variant, as Gunn’s DCU is rebooting and creating new narratives for the projects.

Though there exist possibilities for Joel Kinnaman to reprise his role as the field leader, many netizens rebelled against the killing of the character. This generated enough criticism, which led James Gunn to clarify the importance of Rick in his movie. During HBO Max’s Peacemaker podcast Podlythe filmmaker said:

“People constantly are writing on Twitter about how awful [Peacemaker] is and how mad they are that he killed Rick Flag — and I may get shit for saying this — but what he was doing, he had a reason for doing it.”

While explaining the reason behind Peacemaker killing Rick Flag, James Gunn added:

“[Peacemaker] kills Rick Flag in The Suicide Squad because there’s a piece of evidence that he believes will cause the world a great amount of disturbance and death and violence. He’s covering up the truth. So if you believe in the truth being out there no matter what, you definitely don’t agree with that.”

The Superman: Legacy director mentioned Peacemaker covering the secret by killing Rick Flag, which could have caused severe and unexpected violence in the world. Since the character is no longer alive, there are possible chances for Kinnaman to appear as a variant.
