MCU Made a Big Mistake Rejecting These Original Ideas For Angelina Jolie’s Marvel Debut in ‘Eternals’?

Angelina Jolie finally entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021 as Thena in Eternals directed by the Oscar-winning Chloé Zhao, whose work on Nomadland brought her name to the forefront of the industry. Eternals also features other talented actors such as Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, Richard Madden, Brian Tyree Henry, Gemma Chan, and Barry Keoghan. Angelina Jolie brought Thena’s over 7,000-year-old character to life on the big screen.

MCU Rejected Seven Designs For Angelina Jolie’s Superhero Costume

Hollywood actress, Angelina Jolie made her MCU debut in Eternals and portrayed as Thena, an ancient warrior suffering from a tragic disability. The Marvel Studios’ Eternals: The Art Of The Movie art book revealed seven designs for Angelina Jolie’s Thena but apparently, all the seven were rejected for her MCU debut. One of the rejected concepts for her costume also depicted Thena with short hair.

The initial designs had large variations in style, color, and grandness. The options seemed to have taken inspiration from warriors and soldiers across real-world history. The final costume that the actress donned for her superhero role comprised a white robe-esque armor with a tiara to accompany the regal warrior attire.

Angelina Jolie Shares The Real Reason Why She Signed MCU’s Eternals

Angelina Jolie made her MCU debut as Thena in Marvel’s Eternals. Jolie was one of the biggest names on the project, and her involvement was a surprise to many when it was announced. In one of her global press conferences, the actress shared the true reason behind her accepting the role. Jolie said, “I was attracted to this project for many reasons. I am a fan of MCU. Was a big fan of Chloe‘s (Zhao, director). And then when they first talked to me about the story, really, it was the cast. It was the idea of what this family would be.” 

She continued, “Before I even knew very much about who I was gonna play. Um, but as I learned about Thena, and that’s one of the special things that Chloe brings to this, is she’s known for, bringing reality to a film.” Angelina Jolie added that she just wanted to be a part of this family.
