MCU: The Origin And Future Of The Ten Rings
Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings finally introduced the Ten Rings with mysterious origins despite the fact that they have an important role to play in MCU’s future.
Shang- Chi has become a hero and intends to use the Ten Rings as a force for the good. He is still in possession of the Ten Rings at the end of the film.
But, the film doesn’t reveal about them in detail; there’s much more to them than just being powerful weapons.
The Ten Rings Comics Origins
According to the comics, The Ten Rings have a clear origin. Mandarin found the remains of a crashed starship and dragon-like alien (Axxon-Karr) while traveling to the forbidden Valley of Spirits. He mastered the technology found within and adapted the ship’s propulsion source to craft the Ten Rings. Each ring offers a different power and abilities like ice, mind control, flame, light absorption and more while granting him a long life.
Mandarin then used the Ten Rings in his attempts at world domination and most often going up against Iron Man as he believed technology was the way to achieve his goals.
We are yet unclear whether each of the rings in MCU has such unique abilities as the rings in comics.
The Ten Rings Origin In MCU
The young Shang- Chi was told about by his mother that Wenwu either found the Ten Rings in crater or within a tomb thousand years ago. It is quite ambiguous but it does hint at the comics’ origins as a carter which could have been caused by the crashed Makluan spacecraft.
The tomb could be a reference to the ship itself, seeing it as the grave for the deceased dragon like alien. But the ambiguity as to where the Mandarin found the Ten Rings in the MCU and where they came from allows Marvel Studios to have more creative options down the line.
The could adapt the Ten Rings as being the part of Makluan’s ship technology. And possibly, the rings could tie to something much bigger part of the narrative being told in Phase 4 of MCU.
The Ten Rings Importance For MCU’s Future
It was revealed in Shang-Chi’s after credits scene that the defeat of the Dweller-in-Darkness using the Ten Rings was a major event that caused a significant impact in the MCU.
When they are brought to Wong’s library, the sorcerer reveals to Shang- Chi and Katy that the Rings’ power was felt by the Masters of the Mystic Arts in Kamar – Taj despite the fact that battle took place in an ancient village of Ta Lo in another dimension.
Wong also called Captain Marvel and Dr. Bruce Banner to examine the Ten Rings over hologram.
According to Wong, the Ten Rings don’t match any relics in the archives at Kamar Taj, while Banner confirms that they aren’t made from vibranium or Chitauri technology. And neither can Captain Marvel identify their origins.
Now that Shang- Chi has entered the world of Avengers, mysteries of his new weapons will likely be answered sooner or later especially if something is coming for them!
