MCU Theory Gives Connection Between ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ and ‘Captain America: Civil War’
The Fox/Disney merger deal is expected to happen sometime this month, so it’s not surprising that Marvel fans are looking for any connections between the X-Men and MCU films.
Are Dark Phoenix and Civil War connected?
A fan on Reddit noticed a similarity between Captain America: Civil War and Dark Phoenix. And now it has fans wondering if it could all be a huge coincidence.

Posted to r/Marvel, a subreddit used by fans “dedicated to Marvel Comics and its hundreds of characters”. This image from Dark Phoenix shows a collar worn by Magneto, which looks similar to the one worn by Scarlet Witch in Captain America: Civil War.

As you may notice, both look the same and work similarly to stop the characters use their powers.
While this could be a mere coincidence, fans believe it’s a purposeful choice. Magneto was once believed to be Scarlet Witch’s father in Marvel Comics, so it won’t be too far fetched to believe that the same device could be used to stop their powers from working. Obviously, this has been retconned ever since and mutants don’t exactly exist in the MCU, so it’s tough to say if it means anything.
Many Marvel fans are making good points on both sides of the argument.
“The guys that put the collars on them are called the ‘MCU’”, the original poster added. “I think it’s an Easter egg.”
“Probably more likely a coincidence,” u/DreadPirate_BlueTail argued.

“They could be an early prototype of the collars since Dark Phoenix takes place in the ‘90s,” u/_Andale_ suggested.
“Almost like there are only so many generic prop schemas for ‘sci-fi prison collar’”, u/Spiritofchokedout joked.
“Maybe because they’re from the same comics?,” u/V4lr0g pointed out.
