MCU’s Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch Gives a Spoiler About Avengers 5 in His Latest Interview
Benedict Cumberbatch, popularly known for portraying the character of Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is one of the most exceptionally skilled actors in the industry. The English actor had previously appeared as Sherlock Holmes in the series Sherlock from 2010 to 2017. The audience and the critics have always appreciated his work on-screen, and now MCU fans cannot wait to witness his magic in the upcoming Avengers 5.
Cumberbatch previously appeared as Doctor Stranger in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, directed by Sam Raimi. The movie, upon its release, received a positive response and was named the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2022. In a recent interview, the English actor teased the fans with an update for his character’s next big appearance in the MCU.
Benedict Cumberbatch drops an interesting update on Avengers 5
There are no doubts when talking about how much the ardent MCU fans have been waiting for Avengers 5. Previously known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, it has been pushed for a 2026 release after unforeseen delays, including the recasting of Kang the Conqueror.
The studios dropped Jonathan Majors, who played Kang the Conqueror in the MCU after he was found guilty of assault and harassment. Digital Spy notes that Marvel Studios decided to change the movie title to downplay Kang’s importance in the movie. The studios have not announced the actor who’ll be taking over Kang’s role in the MCU.
In a recent interview with Netflix for his most recent series titled Eric, Benedict Cumberbatch expressed his excitement about reprising his character of Doctor Stranger once again for Avengers 5. He said,
It’s been a lovely relationship with Marvel ever since being cast. I’m very much looking forward to Avengers next year, which is cooking up a storm.
The actor did not hold himself back from expressing how much he loved playing the character, adding that the joy of playing him is immense. Cumberbatch mentioned that the joy of playing him also means that he can help create and platform stories and writing, noting that he’s a gift in many ways in his life.
Fans pointed out that despite the actor giving them a much-needed update on the movie, it also goes on to say that Doctor Strange 3 will not be released before the Avengers assemble. According to reports from THR, Deadpool & Wolverine filmmaker Shawn Levy is being considered to helm Avengers 5. However, the studios are looking into other directors as well for the movie.
Benedict Cumberbatch almost lost out on playing Doctor Strange
The English actor revealed in his interview with Empire that he’d always loved the character of Dr. Stephen Strange, but initially, when he was offered the part, he was committed to starring in Hamlet in London’s Barbican. He said,
I really did think I had to kiss it goodbye. If you can’t jump on board when the ride’s going past, That’s usually it. So the hugest compliment they paid me was to come back to me. It motivated me to try to fulfill their faith in me.
But the director, Scott Derrickson, mentioned that Benedict Cumberbatch was the only actor they had considered for the role. Derrickson noted that it’s not like they didn’t meet other actors after it was clear that Cumberbatch couldn’t back out of Hamlet, but Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said, ‘It’s got to be Benedict.
The actor finally starred in 2016’s Doctor Strange alongside Benedict Wong and Rachel McAdams. It was the fourteenth movie in the MCU, and upon its’ release, it received positive comments, especially for the performances in the movie, visual effects, and musical score. The movie earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects. Doctor Strange helped Cumberbatch cement his footing in the MCU, as he was highly praised for his poise and sharp acting. He is one of the most admired characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
