Michael B. Jordan is known as one of the most influential people in the world and was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2020. The New York Times ranked the actor as one of the greatest actors of the 21st century. Jordan has been part of some of the most successful projects including Creed, Black Panther, Hotel Noir, Against the Wall, and more. Over the years, with his work, Jordan has proved that he deserves the success he has achieved.
The actor, who is influenced by Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Ryan Coogler, George Lucas, and more, made his directorial debut with Creed III in 2023. The movie received positive comments from the critics and the audience, becoming the highest-grossing Creed movie in the franchise. Jordan’s upcoming movie’s trailer hints that he could be soon joining Austin Butler and Timothée Chalamet for a very special honor.
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners trailer debuts with Michael B. Jordan fighting the ‘evil’
Directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners is an upcoming gothic supernatural horror movie starring Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Omar Benson Miller, and more. The story follows two brothers who find themselves caught up in the middle of a terrifying event as they return to their hometown. Sinners is Jordan and Coogler’s fifth collaboration, after Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and a surprise cameo in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
On Monday, Jordan took to his social media to share the poster of the movie, seemingly confirming the rumors that he’d be playing a double role. The first trailer for Sinners was released on Tuesday, and revealed that the story is set in the 1930s Jim Crow era-South.
Not much is known about the movie beyond the title and the gothic setting. The trailer ends with Jordan leading a group of people ready to fight the preacher by saying,
You keep dancing with the devil, and one day he’s going to follow you home.
Even though there is no explicit reference in the trailer, the movie promises a new vision of terror. The movie also holds significance as it is going to mark Coogler’s return to direction after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which honored late actor Chadwick Boseman. Coogler spoke to Variety in 2022 and shared when asked about his upcoming project,
It’s very difficult because you’re exhausted and emotionally spent, and I’m trying to give it all my full attention. But I think it’s going to be some rest and some family time. I don’t know if there’s such a thing as you can go away, take enough time, and come back, and it’s OK—you don’t miss your friend anymore.
Coogler concluded that he does not know how it works because for him, it’s an ongoing process.
Sinners to make way for Michael B. Jordan for an Oscar nomination and join Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler?
The recently released trailer for Sinners has not only increased the anticipation amongst fans to see Michael B. Jordan in a vampire setting, but also convinced them that the movie could be his official entry for an Academy Award nomination. If Jordan gets nominated for Sinners, he’d be joining his fellow contemporaries, including Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler.
The French-American actor Timothée Chalamet has appeared in movies including Little Women, Dune, Wonka, and more. He was nominated under the Best Actor category at the Oscars for his work in Call Me By Your Name. Butler, on the other hand, was nominated for his work on Elvis.
Fans believe that Jordan has the potential to earn a nomination at the Oscars, as he is known to be one of the actors who pours his hundred percent into making a character believable for the audience. Plus, Coogler is one of the talented filmmakers and fans believe in his vision.
Jordan also ventured into direction with Creed III, and back in 2023, during his appearance on Good Morning America, when the actor was asked about his favorite aspect of direction, he said (via ABC News),
I think as an actor you’re always a part of somebody else’s vision, and you’re trying to be the best you can to the best of your ability. But when you have a vision in your head and you can see it—to get other people to see the same thing you see, I think that is satisfying.
Upon asking what was the hardest thing, he said preparing, training, and preparation for the next day of shooting was the hardest thing for him. Upon release, the movie received a positive response.
Sinners is scheduled for release on March 7, 2025.
